BODY SNATCHERS (1993) Reviews of Abel Ferrara’s version

BodySnatchers

Body Snatchers is a 1993 American science fiction horror film and loosely based on the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney. This is the third film adaptation of Finney’s novel, the first adaptation being Invasion of the Body Snatchers in 1956, followed by a remake of the same name in 1978.

Directed by Abel Ferrara and stars Gabrielle Anwar, Billy Wirth, Terry Kinney, Meg Tilly, R. Lee Ermey and Forest Whitaker.

The plot revolves around the discovery that people working at a military base in Alabama are being replaced by perfect physical imitations grown from plant-like pods. The duplicates are indistinguishable from normal people except for their utter lack of emotion…

Reviews:
“This version, if it has any faults, lies in the familiarity of its story – one knows what is going on, so there are no surprises to the reports that people’s spouses are not themselves anymore or in Meg Tilly’s enigmatic smiles. Ferrara perhaps realizes this and does not dwell too long on the build-up before launching into the far more effective all-out nightmare.” Moria

“The “pod people” are creatures of subtlety and subterfuge, and it is masterfully conveyed, here, as it always was in the franchise. Most zombie productions struggle to create a sense of paranoia, whereas this series inspires fear by implication and with little gore. It doesn’t shy away from visuals, though.” Tales of Terror
