THE THING (2011) Reviews and overview

‘Mankind’s greatest discovery could be its last’
The Thing is a 2011 American-Canadian science fiction horror film directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer based on the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell. It is a prequel to the 1982 film of the same name by John Carpenter, the plot ending immediately before the start of the plot for that film.

The movie stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Eric Christian Olsen.

Plot:
A team of Norwegian and American scientists discover an alien buried deep in the ice of Antarctica, realising too late that it is still alive, consuming and replicating the team members…

Reviews:
“Certainly, Van Heijningen’s film may not be entirely a true original, but it succeeds in bringing something different to the table, and in its use of suspense and graphic horror, it’s easily one of the best horror films of this second decade of the century. Maybe not a perfect replica, but a remarkable attempt nonetheless.” W-Cinema

” …the number of touches that are there to ensure consistency with Carpenter’s film, plus some impressive special effects mean that you would have to be an extremely unforgiving and demanding horror fan not to have a good time with this. I was expecting ropey CGI but instead, I had difficulty distinguishing the prosthetics from the digital work.” House of Mortal Cinema
