THE CRAZIES (2010) Reviews and overview

The Crazies is a 2010 American science fiction horror film directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Scott Kosar and Ray Wright. The film is a remake of the 1973 film of the same name by George A. Romero, who was also the executive producer and co-writer of the remake. The movie stars Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.

The film was released on February 26, 2010, to largely positive reviews from critics, and was a box office success both domestically and internationally.

Plot:

In the fictional town of Ogden Marsh, Pierce County, Iowa, “friendliest place on Earth,” the town water supply is accidentally infected with the “Trixie” virus. After an incubation period of 48 hours, this virus gradually transforms the mental state of the infected into that of cold, calculating, depraved, bloodthirsty killers, who then prey on family and neighbours alike…

Reviews:

“Where Eisner deserves most praise is in his manipulation of genre conventions, with his film having more in common with Shyamalan’s Signs than with many contemporary horror films, with so many from the last few years seeming like soulless exercises in money making, relying on the loyal horror crowd to pay up regardless of the quality. I can’t praise Eisner enough for making use of the most neglected asset of great horror – implication.” Film 4

“Switching from fright film to Holocaust metaphor without ever relinquishing its popcorn-flick credentials, this is a vivid portrait of small-town apocalypse that earns its place in the annals of horror remake excellence.” Total Film

“The sound design, in particular, also stands out. Metallic scraping, slow, heavy footsteps, silence and maniacal laughter all add a lot to the films effectiveness and it’s something commonly overlooked. It doesn’t pull any punches either. The violence is fast, bloody, nasty and pretty inventive at times.” Zombie Command
