ROCK MONSTER (2008) Reviews and overview

Rock Monster is a 2008 television horror monster film written and directed by Declan O’Brien (SnakemanWrong Turn 4 and 5; Joy Ride 3) based on a story by Ron Fernandez.

Main cast:

Chad Collins, Jon Polito, Natalie Denise Sperl, Alicia Lagano, David Figlioli, Harry Anichkin, Daniel Hembling.

Plot:

A group of college students travel to an Eastern European village. The protagonist, Jason, pulls a sword from a stone, unwittingly reviving a giant monster whose body is made of rock (hence the title name). Soon, Jason learns that one of his ancestors had slain this monster before with the sword, and he plans to do the same.

The main antagonist, Dimitar, possesses a key stone that has the power to either kill or control the monster, and he plans to transfer the rock monster’s spirit into his body with hopes of the spirit making him “omnipotent”. The rock monster goes on a killing spree, regenerating and blending in with mountain and stony hill features. It rips open the skull of a man as it travels with Dimitar to the village, where it is defeated by Jason and his sword, which is revealed to be Excalibur.

Reviews:

“Tongue-in-cheek, though never fully committed to being an outright horror comedy, opting instead for a cheeky tone along the lines of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, the film is so cheerily good natured that even dead friends go quickly forgotten…” Dread Central

“The monster looks like it was pulled right out of a video game and the plot so undercooked it probably has E.coli. I could throw out some painfully wincing dialogue as examples, but they’re so bad, my fingers would hurt from typing them.” Drinkin’ & Drive-In
