THE COLLECTION (2012) Reviews and overview

‘Every great collector has a vision.’
The Collection is a 2012 horror film directed by Marcus Dunstan (director of The Neighbor; writer of Piranha 3DD; Saw 3D: The Final Chapter; Feast and sequels) from a screenplay co-written with Patrick Melton. It is a sequel to the pair’s The Collector (2009). The Collected was due to follow but the production shut down after just eight days of filming.

The movie stars Josh Stewart (The Dark Knight Rises), Emma Fitzpatrick (The Social Network), and Christopher McDonald (Requiem for a Dream).

Plot:
When Elena’s (Emma Fitzpatrick) friends take her to a secret party at an undisclosed location, she never imagined she would become the latest victim of The Collector, a psychopathic killer. The Collector kidnaps and transports her to an abandoned hotel he’s transformed into his own private maze of torture and death.

Upon learning of his daughter’s disappearance, Elena’s wealthy father (Christopher McDonald) hires a group of mercenaries to retrieve her from the vicious grips of The Collector. These mercenaries coerce Arkin (Josh Stewart), the only man to have escaped the wrath of this heinous monster, to lead them through the gruesome labyrinth. Now, Arkin finds himself fighting for his own life in order to save Elena…

Reviews:
“Like its predecessor, it’s a stylish picture, nicely lit by cinematographer Sam McCurdy […] There’s little advancement in the killer’s motivation or the overall design of his torment, finding the feature working the same stalk-and-kill beats as before, only here the murders are more outrageous and the victims a little less interesting.” Blu-ray.com

The Collection is well-constructed from the ground floor up. The plot flies by at a blitzkrieg pace that never allows for tedium, and there is some truly inventive cinematography at play. It’s also very much appreciated that the characters are not bereft of common sense as are so many in horror sequels.” Film School Rejects

“Lionsgate’s Blu-ray release of The Collection is impressive, with a fine image, great sound, and a decent…erm, collection of bonus features. The 1080p picture is just fantastic, with inky blacks and gorgeous hues, looking razor-fine throughout […] And the sound design is superb, fully immersive with loads of surround detail. A great presentation for a great flick.” Dread Central

“You get a sinking feeling with this one when the first major sadism set-piece is the absurd looking one where The Collector brings a scythe device that looks like the thresher on a combine harvester down to massacre dozens of dancing patrons at a nightclub. None of the rest of the film improves on that much.” Moria
