‘In the shadows, he waits…’

Intruder is a 2015 American horror thriller film written and directed by former production designer Travis Zariwny [as Travis Z] (Cabin Fever [2016]; The Midnight Man) for Stormchaser Films. It should not to be confused with the 1989 film Intruder.

The film stars co-producer Louise Linton (Cabin Fever), John Robinson, Moby, Justin Ament (Harvest of FearThe Path of Evil), Steven Beckingham (Grimm), Teresa Decher (Cabin Fever), Susannah Mars, Mary McDonald-Lewis.

Portland, Oregon: After she lands her dream job, a young cellist (Louise Linton) settles in for a relaxing few days holed up in her apartment. However, as a violent storm rages outside, she can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching her every move…

Reviews:

“It’s all about as dreary as the constant rainfall featured as part of the Portland, Ore., setting, and the director, when he’s not leeringly photographing his leading lady’s naked body in the shower, vainly tries to up the scare ante by periodically raising the soundtrack volume to intolerable levels. The clichéd stylistic device does at least have the benefit of keeping viewers awake.” Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

“The shallow focus shots of the menacing character, the way the orchestral scores strikes up a mess of dissonant chords whenever something creepy is happening, or maybe happening, would be annoying in almost any context. They’re particularly annoying in a 90-minute movie whose story would better be told in a 20-minute segment of an Amicus omnibus film.” Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.comScreen Shot 2016-08-10 at 09.58.05

“The idea that someone has entered our home is terrifying on its face, but Z’s film squanders that unease almost immediately by settling into a boring and repetitive routine of actions. The blurry figure moves in the background of a shot. The closet door he’s hiding behind opens or closes. The cat watches the intruder.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects

“Most of Zariwny’s credits are as a production designer, so maybe it’s no surprise that the most effective scene shows the intruder interacting with the set, idly messing with Elizabeth’s possessions while she’s asleep. A false ending makes the dawdling even more infuriating, but there comes a point when any ending is a blessing.” Rob Staeger, The Village Voice

“There are no surprises here. There is no originality here. Intruder has nothing to offer, even to the casual horror film viewer.” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News

Release:

Intruder received a VOD and limited North American theatrical release on June 24, 2016, via IFC Midnight. On November 22, 2016, a Blu-ray + DVD combo was released by Scream Factory.
