Reviews:

Dead Men works well enough as a stand-alone, swashbuckling comedic spectacle, thanks to the terrific performances, some ingenious practical effects, impressive CGI and a steady diet of PG-13 dialogue peppered with not particularly sophisticated but (I have to admit) fairly funny sexual innuendo.” Chicago Sun Times

“The longstanding debt to Ray Harryhausen goes beyond the familiar skeletons – here, ghost pirates – and includes an animated ship’s figurehead in homage to The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, though like most of the creatures she doesn’t get to stick around long enough to show much personality. Another set-piece features zombie sharks (yes, they’ve had a Syfy movie already) and the sea parts C.B. DeMille style in what would once have been an effects climax but is now almost a throwaway.” The Kim Newman Web Site

“The pacing is spot-on, the set-pieces memorable and all the characters are allowed to shine, without it ever becoming The Johnny Depp Show. Standout moments include the opening bank robbery (with horses towing an entire building away), an execution scene complete with swinging guillotine and Salazar unleashing some ghostly sharks (super-scary in 3D).” Games Radar

“Yes, the running time is too long, and there’s a point where it jumps the CGI zombie shark. But the acting pulls you back in and, of course, the production values are knockout.” London Metro

“Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (“Kon-Tiki”) seem to not have the slightest idea how to make this material sing; instead, it’s mostly a noisy, dark 3D blur in which the characters run around a lot, seemingly looking for the exits. Poor Bardem has to speak all his lines with a metaphor-inducing mouthful of inky blood…” The Seattle Times

Dead Men Tell No Tales often feels like an attempt to give the franchise the Force Awakens treatment, with Thwaites and Scodelario serving as obvious analogues to Bloom and Knightley; Depp, though still the focal point, becomes something akin to their kooky uncle […] Treasure comes in many forms here, and Rønning and Sandberg know which ones are worth pursuing.” IndieWire

” …overkill in the form of distracting 3-D gimmickry, eardrum-endangering sound, frantic action set pieces, CGI spectacle (warning: get ready for super-fake ghost sharks) and the debasement of such top-tier talents as Bill Nighy, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and, now, Javier Bardem that the studio needs to simply drop anchor and move on.” RogerEbert.com

“Just when a hand-to-hand quarrel should break out, characters flee or cameras cut to an impromptu wedding. We also get cheap anecdotes like Paul McCartney playing Sparrow’s uncle for nothing more than a passing gag. Characters never seem to be fighting for their lives – only the next lame punchline.” We Got This Covered
