QUARRIES (2016) Reviews and overview

‘They just keep coming’

Quarries is a 2016 American survival horror thriller film directed by Nils Taylor from a screenplay co-written with Nicole Marie Johnson. The movie stars the latter, alongside Leisha Hailey and Carrie Finklea.

Plot:

To escape her abusive boyfriend, Kat joins a wilderness expedition with a group of women, all of whom are struggling with the uncertainty of life. What was supposed to be an opportunity for personal discovery quickly becomes a fight for survival, forcing each one to discover the strength within themselves that they didn’t even know they possessed.

While being brazenly chased by a pack of male predators, the strong quickly set themselves apart from the weak. In a battle of will, stamina, and heart, these very virtues present themselves at the most crucial moment. With death looming, each is left with what is truly important – the strength within oneself…

Reviews:

Quarries makes it partway on the strength of engaging exterior cinematography and the empowered action of women who refuse to roll over as victims. Fight scenes are energetic, if repetitive.  Acting ekes out some intrigue from underdone material. But a script taken out of the oven too early forces the film to fall down a steep ravine into mediocrity.” Culture Crypt

” …it’s tough to find any glimmers of hope throughout the film’s lean 80 minutes. The characters are thinly sketched to the point of insult, there’s little demonstration of even the most basic storytelling elements and technical mishaps crop up with such regularity that it’s tough to ever take the film seriously.” Film Enquiry:

“Yes, the men here are nuts, but they find themselves in the one place (a wilderness) that they feel that they still control (if only by violence) even as the forest is burning all around them anyway. It is one stark yet fascinating film.” Fr. Dennis at the Movies

“While the audience gets ample amount of background story on each of our leading ladies, barely any history is given on the crazed hunters, and that’s sort of frustrating. That could very well be intentional, and regardless, it’s hard not to fall in love with this feature. The rich storytelling and sense of realism easily makes Quarries a “Must Watch” Modern Horrors

“The strength of the women’s roles and the implications of the antagonists’ background make for an engrossing experience. I do wish that there had been a more interesting soundtrack, but the rest of the production values are good. Fans of The Descent (2005) or Carnage Park (2016) should definitely enjoy this picture.” Nightmarish Conjurings

“It’s a powerful, female-driven horror thriller that brings intensity, epic and brutal kills, and strong character leads. These chicks fight back and don’t think twice about it. That’s what I love the most; it’s not just one of the women, it’s all of them.” Pop Horror
