TOKYO GHOUL (2017) Reviews and overview

Tokyo Ghoul is a 2017 Japanese supernatural horror film directed by Kentarō Hagiwara, based on the manga series Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida. It stars Masataka Kubota and Fumika Shimizu.

In an alternate reality, ghouls are individuals who can only survive by eating human flesh. They live among the normal humans in secret, hiding their true nature to evade pursuit from the authorities.

Ken Kaneki, is a normal college student who, after being taken to a hospital, discovers that he underwent a surgery that transformed him into a half-ghoul after being attacked by his date, Rize Kamishiro. This was accomplished by transferring Rize’s organs into his body, and now, like normal ghouls, he must consume human flesh to survive.

Struggling with his new life as a half-ghoul, he must now adapt into the ghoul society, as well as keeping his identity hidden from his human companions…

Reviews:

” …the film is never dull. There is constantly something going on, be it in character development or scenes where the Commission of Counter Ghoul agents, known by the ghouls as “doves”, are conducting their investigations to try to find and ultimately conduct their exterminations with the kagune of previously dispatched ghouls.” Dread Central

“The primary character was interesting enough, with his predicament drawn large and his uncomfortable relationship with his new lifestyle intact. I missed the gourmet storyline but understand that will be the subject of a second live-action film. Not as involved or as fulfilling as the anime but not a bad effort all told.” Taliesin Meets the Vampires
