Within – USA, 2016 – reviews

‘You can’t keep out what’s already inside’

Within is a 2016 American horror film directed by Phil Claydon (Oak; Alone) from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman (The Nun; IT; Annabelle; Wolves at the Door; et al). The movie stars Michael Vartan, Erin Moriarty and Nadine Velazquez.

Plot:

A family move into a beautiful house, as they begin to settle they begin to notice something isn’t quite right. Things begin to move, food gets eaten.

Things start to get worse when they realise someone is actually living in the crawlspace of the home they’ve just bought. But they find out the hard way…

Reviews:

“Prone to moments of ridiculousness, and eliciting intensive periods of head-shaking and chin-scratching, it’s the perfect antidote to po-faced post-horror (as The Guardian would say), complete with a satisfying denouement that should send shivers down the spine of even the most begrudging blood junkie.” The Schlock Pit

” …all the effort seems to have gone into ensuring it’s handsomely shot and handsomely cast, with very little concern given for generating real atmosphere, taking real chances, or building characters which the audience, not to mention the cast, can actually give a shit about…” Warped Perspective

“The villain is definitely one of the best things in Within (which also goes by the title Crawlspace). That’s not to say he’s the only good thing about the movie. Within is absolutely a decent horror movie with all the classic tricks.” Heaven of Horror

“So basically, without giving away any spoilers, you will have to see this film to believe it. The sound effects are quite effective. Yes, indeed, there are jump scares. But those are not of the clichéd variety that you will see in ordinary horror films.” The Times of India

“Like all such horrors, as soon as the culprit is found out, things escalate at frightening speed, as though filmmakers Claydon and co are keen to get to the finale when they could have lulled us back into a false sense of security and really played with our minds. There was ample scope to do this and be clever about it.” HeyUGuys

“The family’s cat’s part ends a little too abruptly. The samey occurrences are probably enough to make you not want to know what the story is essentially about, after all. And, if you somehow come to know what’s within, you will only feel sorry for every actor delivering top-hole performances.” Leaky Loonage

“Basically, this is just a very generic horror movie: While its slow-burn approach is commendable, and the revelation of the identity of the villain in the third act at least surprising, everything else is strictly by the numbers, from build-up to characters to dialogue even.” Mike Haberfelner, Search My Trash
