‘School’s out of luck’

Leprechaun Returns is a 2018 American supernatural horror  film directed by Steven Kostanski (The Void; The ABCs of Death 2; Father’s Day) from a screenplay written by Suzanne Keilly (Ash vs Evil Dead).

Linden Porco (Smart Mouth from Channel Zero: Butcher’s Block) plays the titular character, alongside Taylor Spreitler (Amityville: The Awakening), Pepi Sonuga (Ash vs Evil Dead), and Sai Bennett (Lake Placid: Legacy), Mark Holton (as Ozzie from the original 1993 film), Emily Reid, Oliver Llewellyn-Jenkins, and Ben McGregor.

Plot:

Twenty-five years after the events of the original film, a maniacal leprechaun is doing whatever it takes (including committing gruesome murder) to track down his stolen pot of gold. Unfortunately, a group of female students unwittingly awaken the leprechaun while tearing down a cabin to build a new sorority house…

Reviews:

” …this is grade-B horror/comedy cheese at its very best. Simply put: it’s so damn ridiculous that it’s laughable and, therefore, enjoyable. Chock-full of innuendo and pop culture humor – and a leprechaun who enjoys a good selfie – you can’t help but chuckle at Leprechaun Returns.” Cryptic Rock

“With its bare-bones plot, lackluster characters and foolish adherence to slasher tropes, Leprechaun Returns is a film that, despite some excellent effects work, should have been left at the bottom of the well.” Film Pulse

“I’m happy that this reboot had the smallest, greenest, evilest Leprechaun return in his full glory; but Warwick reprising the role would have been more than welcomed. But Mark Holton did return as Ozzie, and he spends a good chunk of time on screen in Leprechaun Returns. Such a friendly face welcoming the audience back to a comedy-horror massacre.” Horror Society

” …this is a horror tick box cackle-fest, boasting some quotable one-liners and some inventive death scenes – watch out for the solar slicer, the sprinkler silencer and drone decapitator.” Kultguy’s Keep

…Leprechaun: Returns is as ludicrous and campy as it is a delightfully fun romp. Linden Porco does a find job picking up the hat and jigg of his predecessor – and after a heavy year of social commentary and deeply driven metaphors, it’s refreshing to return to some silly, slashin’ roots.” Nightmare on Film Street

” …consistently funny with its twisted sense of humor and returning focus on many big and minor elements alike that clearly showcase the creative team’s passion for the franchise. It has its hiccups and some moments that appear intended to come off as slick or funny occasionally fall flat in the worst way possible, but so many other aspects are spot-on…” Screen Connections

“Fans should be pleased to see that this sequel is a decent return-to-form for the franchise, especially after the debacle that was the 2014 attempted reboot. This Lep is no Warwick Davis, but the new guy does a fairly decent job as the titular character and all the gory and practical deaths make up for most of the film’s terrible writing, which is the weakest aspect of the movie.” Upcoming Horror Movies

Leprechaun Returns mixes red blood and green goo with exquisitely gory results, but Steven Kostanski’s command of over-the-top deaths isn’t enough to distract from the film’s flat-footed storytelling jig.” We Got This Covered

“Director Steven Kostanski delivers some satisfying special effects which, if my memory serves me, are much gorier than anything featured in the original film, which might have made this film more rewarding for me. Reminder, see The Void, which Kostanski co-directed, which friggin’ rules.” The Wolfman Returns

Choice dialogue:

“A Walkman and a camera, all in one. Impressive!”

Actor Warwick Davis has explained why he didn’t return for Leprechaun Returns, saying:

“You know what, we did six Leprechaun films and around Halloween people always watch them and love them. Horror is an interesting medium, I think it’s different when you have kids, you look at horror in a slightly different way. Since I finished the Leprechaun films I had kids and I see the world through their eyes and to be in a horror movie right now is probably not quite right, I will wait until my son turns eighteen and then I’ll do some horror again.”
