YOU MIGHT BE THE KILLER (2018) Reviews and overview

You Might Be the Killer is a 2018 American comedy slasher horror film directed by Brett Simmons from a screenplay co-written with Thomas P. Vitale. The movie stars Fran Kranz, Alyson Hannigan and Brittany S. Hall.

Plot:

Sam (Fran Kranz) is the owner of the summer camp in which a masked mystery killer is killing off the counsellors who are attending an “off-the-grid” event. Desperate, he contacts his comic book clerk buddy, Chuck (Alyson Hannigan), and the pair try to work out the identity of the murderous perpetrator…

Reviews:

” …Simmons has some real fun with a back-and-forth timeline (and ever-shifting kill clock for the counselor body count), and some of the most Karo syrup-drenched deaths this side of a Hatchet film. While Wes Craven’s deconstructionist franchise may have invented (and arguably perfected) the meta-serial killer flick, this blood-splattered romp chops its way toward the more comedic end of the self-aware slayer genre…” The Austin Chronicle

You Might Be the Killer goes out of its way to poke fun at the horror tropes we’ve all become used to. It doesn’t necessarily land every joke, but it remains fun to watch even when it falters. It also takes time to show respect to the genre, giving the audience plenty of good kills, a chase scene or two, and even an attempt to light the killer on fire.” Birth. Movies. Death.

“Meta horror is a tricky thing to pull off these days […] You Might Be the Killer can’t quite match the greatness of Cabin in the Woods or the heart of The Final Girls, but it’s a solid if slight piece of slasher comedy that’s made with love, for the people who love the genre.” Collider

You Might Be the Killer contains some overdone winks such as a pair named Freddie (sic) and Nancy, and several slightly showy claws at cred by name-dropping flicks like Maniac Cop. But the film doesn’t disrespectfully talk down to fright film fans. You can tell the creators care about horror…” Culture Crypt

” …it’s less concerned with “who” and more focused on the “why” and “what do I do about it?” This is what I love about the film—it explores the concept of what would happen if Jason Voorhees grew a conscience and started pondering the ramifications of his murder spree.” Daily Dead

“Even when it’s a little obvious and slightly monotonous, Kranz and Hannigan are engaging, the large supporting cast plays their stereotypical victim roles well, the gore is great, and it’s fun to try and guess where this is all going. Most of the time, you’ll guess right, but that’s basically the point.” io9
