There’s Someone Inside Your House is a 2021 American slasher horror film directed by Patrick Brice (Creep and Creep 2) from a screenplay written by Henry Gayden (Zombie Roadkill), based on Stephanie Perkins’ 2017 novel of the same name. James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps co-produced the movie for Netflix.

The adaptation is apparently “a combination of two different beloved teenage genres: the slashers that came to prominence in the ’80s and ’90s and the character-driven coming of age classics a la John Hughes’ films and American Graffiti.”

The movie stars Sydney Park, Théodore Pellerin, Asjha Cooper (Black as Night), Dale Whibley, Jesse LaTourette, Diego Josef, Burkely Duffield, Sarah Dugdale, William MacDonald, Andrew Dunbar and Markian Tarasiuk.

Plot:

It’s been almost a year since Makani Young came to live with her grandmother in landlocked Nebraska, and she’s still adjusting to her new life. And still haunted by her past in Hawaii.

Then, one by one, the students of her small-town high school begin to die in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, Makani will be forced to confront her own dark secrets…

Review:

[…] …can you forgive some pretty heavy-handed wokeness? Normally I find it hard to find fault with people who want to be better and do better but in a horror movie it just feels shoe-horned in […] Are we rewriting the genre here? We most certainly are not. But they’re an affable bunch of kids and it’s pretty fun watching them get slaughtered.” @ssholes Watching Movies

“Everything exists on a surface level in this hollow slasher. Characters never feel fully realized, the two lead lovebirds lack chemistry, and a lack of tension can’t sustain such a low body count or horror […] It attempts to make big swings in the finale, but not even a fun set piece can make the obvious exciting.” Bloody Disgusting

“This is everything I wanted, and didn’t get, from the Fear Street trilogy, accomplished in about a quarter of the time! A fun slasher clearly inspired by the genre classics and aimed at teenagers. It’s kinda sweet, too! The kills are well-staged and there are some really great performances here.” Brett Arnold

“Fun slasher with some characters I actually cared about. The killer had some pretty inventive methods, both in the lead-up and the actual kill. Maybe because it’s still fresh in my mind, but I got Fear Street vibes from this.” Ian Wilder

“Things wrap up maybe a little too neatly for my taste, which is no dig on the excellent script. I think I just like my horror with that extra tinge of darkness. The way this wraps up feels easy, and lacking in significant consequence for the survivors. If one expects some meta deconstruction or game-changing nihilistic slasher thrills, look elsewhere.” Josh at the Movies

“To the filmmaker’s credit, that message resonates in key moments. But between a lack of our main group outside of Makani being put in any danger, uninteresting motives from the villain (or villains), and jarring tonal shifts that switch between campy slasher and melodramatic teen drama, There’s Someone Inside Your House is a Scream baby that can’t quite figure out how to walk.” Killer Horror Critic

“This is a fun throwback to ‘90s slashers with some great kills and likable characters (many of whom aren’t given enough screen time). Kinda woofs it in the third act and I’m meh on the killer reveal, but it’s a fun enough Friday night flick.” Trace Thurman

” …while a bit of ironic detachment isn’t necessarily a hindrance, too many latter-day horror flicks’ attempts to show they’re in on the joke make it difficult to get invested in their stories. Despite initially appearing poised to repeat this too-cool-for-school mistake, Someone moves past it by emphasizing not vengeance but redemption. This is more refreshing than it should be.” Variety

Release:

Reviews of the book:

“The best new horror of the season… Fans of the genre will feel at home with this book, which mixes the wit of modern slasher films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer with the grounded characters and emotions of contemporary YA.” Mashable

“Perkins lulls readers into a false sense of security before twisting the knife. . . . the body count keeps rising, leaving readers with questions of motive and where it will all end.” Publishers Weekly

There’s Someone Inside Your House is a heart-pounding page-turner with an outstanding cast of characters, a deliciously creepy setting, and an absolutely merciless body count. Best read at night with big bowl of popcorn, this is a killer addition to the slasher genre written by one of the best contemporary YA writers around.” —Courtney Summers, author of All the Rage and Cracked Up to Be
