ROTTENTAIL (2019) Reviews and overview [updated]

‘Hippity hoppity homicide’

Rottentail is a 2019 science-fiction comedy horror film directed by Brian Skiba (Deprivation; Slaughter Creek; Blood Moon Rising) from a screenplay co-written with David C. Hayes, based on the graphic novel of the same name. The movie stars Corin Nemec, William McNamara, Dominique Swain, Laurie Love and Byron Browne.

Plot:

Young Peter Cotton grew up in the town of Easter Falls and loves rabbits. Peter’s science project on rabbit breeding is ruined when the school bullies beat up, and actually kill, his rabbit.

Years later, the kind but still shy Doctor Cotton works steadily and gently with his rabbits to cure human infertility. Unbeknownst to Peter, the military is meddling with his work, developing fierce soldiers with strength far exceeding a human of their size, and with Peter’s fertility serum, the ability to breed in the field.

Peter discovers the true nature of the experiment and attempts to stop it. But in an accident of poetic justice, a bite from an experimental mutant rabbit combines with Peter’s own serum to transform him into the evil Rottentail. This creature heads to Easter Falls to exact revenge on the wrongdoings of his youth and to finally lay claim to the love of his life…

Reviews:

” …do not expect anything sophisticated. It is a movie with an absurd and over the top screenplay along with the acting, but this serves the higher purpose of being plenty fun. From this perspective, it has the potential to garner a cult following from people that enjoy these kinds of campy themed horror comedies.” 10th Circle Movie Reviews

Rottentail is a film that doesn’t even attempt to take itself seriously, it’s a stupid story and it knows it, in fact, it plays to its strengths and double downs on the comic book angle. There is plenty of blood and violence to be found here, plenty of lowbrow jokes, and if you are looking for entertainment and willing to switch off your brain then it can be enjoyable enough.” The Rotting Zombie

” …the filmmakers throw plenty of gore gags, gross-outs and cartoony sound effects (including flatulence, of course) against the wall, but only a small percentage stick. Rottentail lacks the pell-mell pacing that an in-your-face exercise like this needs to work, and there isn’t nearly enough plot or interesting incident here to justify the 106-minute running time.” Rue Morgue

Rottentail is most reminiscent of horror a monster b-movies of the late 1980s and early 1990s, but with its very own humouristic spin attached to them, which is rather certain to bode well with fans, with some wonderfully grotesque gore effects and some suitably over-the-top performances – with special praise going to Corin Nemec and William McNamara here – really hitting this one home.” Search My Trash

“The creature design is out of this world. The stunts look fake but are impressive, nonetheless. Brian Skiba managed to direct his actors in a way to get harmonious deliveries, which is crucial considering the peculiar comedic tone. Corin Nemec, Rottentail, is exactly what this script needs.” Tales of Terror

Rottentail wants to be another Toxic Avenger but, while it can copy its style, it lacks that film’s wit and genuine humor. Rottentail feels like a subpar frequently forced attempt at creating a cult film. And like other attempts, it falls flat. Even the bloopers shown during the end credits are weak.” Voices from the Balcony
