WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE (2018) Reviews and overview

We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a 2018 American macabre mystery drama film directed by Stacie Passon (Concussion) from a screenplay co-written with Mark Kruger, based on Shirley Jackson’s 1962 story of the same name. The Furthur Films-Albyn Media-Mighty Engine production stars Crispin Glover, Alexandra Daddario, Taissa Farmiga and Sebastian Stan.

Plot:

The Blackwood family – Constance (Alexandra Daddario), Merricat (Taissa Farmiga) and their Uncle Julian (Crispin Glover) – live in isolation after experiencing a family tragedy six years earlier. The family use rituals and talismans to ward off hostile townspeople.

When distant cousin Charles (Sebastian Stan) arrives to steal the family fortune, he also threatens a dark secret they’ve been hiding..

Reviews:

“It wins some points for atmosphere and dread […] but this old school mystery drama about isolation and paranoia is way too low-key in its approach, despite the surprising amount of violence it contains…” CineMarvellous!

Release:

We Have Always Lived in the Castle was released on VOD on May 17, 2019.

Filming locations:

Bray, Dublin and Enniskerry, Ireland
