DEADCON (2019) Reviews and overview

Deadcon is a 2019 American supernatural horror film directed by Caryn Waechter (Killdeer) from a screenplay written by Scotty Landes (Ma). The Gunpowder & Sky Alter-Hyde Park Entertainment production stars Lauren Elizabeth, Claudia Sulewski, Dominic Burgess and Lukas Gage.

The film features a soundtrack score by Das Mörtal.

Plot:

Staying in adjoining suites at a hotel hosting ViewCon—a collection of YouTube and Instagram stars and their legion of fans—Ashley and Megan soon discover that there are things scarier than thousands of teenagers armed with phone, asking for selfies.

Their rooms are haunted by the vengeful ghosts of some of the original pioneers of social media, including a terrifying young boy named Bobby. And what did happen to those poor children in Room 2210A in 1984?

Reviews:

“The novelty of its setting earns Deadcon points for relevancy, but it never quite comes together as a horror movie. It’s put together well, but squanders the opportunity to provide any commentary on its subject matter.” Patrick Bromley, Bloody Disgusting

” …a fun and stylish chiller with enough original ideas to keep you interested. It boasts a great understanding of YouTube culture, keeping it feeling fresh and authentic. The understated scares are effective, the mystery is intriguing and unique, and the effects and aesthetic are wonderful.” Nightmare on Film Street

Deadcon had its moments but was let down by what felt like a lack of focus. Get rid of the whole convention part of this, strip the horror a bit back to basics (such as removing the possession idea) and add in more of the effective 1984 based flashbacks and this could be a decent horror, as it stands though if you are planning on giving this a view be prepared to ride the rough with the smooth.” The Rotting Zombie

“Despite the setting, almost nothing is done with the YouTube/Instagram angle. Deadcon is pretty much a generic haunted building film with The Shining being its influencer […]The fact everyone is recording everything does let the film go into found footage mode for the last few minutes. But really that’s all that’s done with the idea.” Voices from the Balcony
