OMEN IV: THE AWAKENING (1991) Reviews and overview

‘They said it was over. They were wrong.’

Omen IV: The Awakening is a 1991 American supernatural horror film directed by Jorge Montesi (Night Visitors; Friday the 13th: The Series) and Dominique Othenin-Girard (Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers; After Darkness) from a screenplay by Brian Taggert, based on a storyline co-written with Harvey Bernhard.

The movie stars Faye Grant, Michael Woods, Michael Lerner, Madison Mason, Ann Hearn, Jim Byrnes, Don S. Davis and Asia Vieira.

This belated sequel was made for Fox television but released theatrically in some territories.

Omen IV: The Awakening will be available as part of Scream Factory’s The Omen Collection: Deluxe Edition Blu-ray five-disc set on October 15, 2019.

Plot:

Damien Thorn is dead, but his prophecy is reborn in a mysterious girl named Delia, who is adopted by two attorneys, Gene and Karen York. When Karen realises her baby was born under suspicious circumstances, she hires a private investigator to find Delia’s real parents.

A series of bizarre accidents occur, and Karen begins to suspect everyone of conspiring against her as she unravels the truth about her baby…

Reviews:

The visuals of the original Omen series were always a high point. The manner of deaths was crazy, but here due to TV’s toned down nature, they aren’t as graphic […]The only death I can say was good was Lerner which in style and shooting did match up with other deaths in the series…” Basement Rejects

“This TV movie has a few exciting moments […] A sequence at a psychic fair is especially effective. But the teleplay by Brian Taggert has a beheading sequence, the evil devil dog that causes a death, and other familiar “horrible deaths, without exploring new territory.” John Stanley, Creature Features

“An alternately boring and unintentionally funny attempt to breathe life into a very dead franchise.” eFilmCritic

“This is a flick where the first hack director quit to be replaced by an even worse hack, a character’s name is misspelled in the credits, and it went direct to Fox TV.  Sounding bad yet?  How about the biggest part going to Faye Grant, whose greatest performance was in V, a mini-series that has sullied the sci-fi genre for years.” The Film Atheist

“On one hand there is a certain amount of creativity to this but on the other it is utterly ridiculous and makes Omen IV: The Awakening the far fetched nonsense which it is often mocked for being.” The Movie Scene

” …the screenplay is limp and gives its performers little to work with, on the way to a copycat finale that subverts its own inception: After all, it’s remarkable that the filmmakers attempted to continue the series with a female antagonist but the climax is a disappointing (and self-negating) cheat.” Pop Culture Thoughts

“As it is there is enjoyment to be had here but it takes a fair while to get there and steals too many moments already used in previous films. If there had been more new ideas and a better cast (with the exception of the P.I.  and the family doctor no one really stood out) this would have been all the better.” The Rotting Zombie

“As hysterically ridiculous as Taggart’s script is, Othenin-Girard actually does the best he can with it. The camera set-ups are professional with a nice eye for composition. He also tries to get the most spectacularly melodramatic acting out of his cast and when combined with the whack-job script, propel this stinker to a whole new level.” Video Junkie

“Even though the flick was made for TV, it still had a number of decent kills. There was a quality decapitation that was completely bloodless yet still was true to the series’ standards. We also got an ok snake attack, death by wrecking ball, an assault with a scalpel, and not one but two nannies biting the big one.” The Video Vacuum

Choice dialogue:

Father Mattson (Duncan Fraser): ‘There’s nothing that isn’t politics, Mrs York. Look around us. We’re ushering the Antichrist to a world of over population, pollution, crime. Our hell is his paradise.”

Karen York (Faye Grant): “That freak will never rule because I’m going to kill him!”
