JACOB’S LADDER (2019) Reviews and overview

Jacob’s Ladder is a 2019 American mystery horror feature film and a remake of the 1990 movie of the same name, “that introduces new situations and characters, though it will pose similar existential questions regarding life, death, reality and perception”.

The movie was directed by David M. Rosenthal from a screenplay by Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train), based on an early draft by Jake Wade Wall (When a Stranger Calls; The Hitcher).

The LD Entertainment-Gaeta/Rosenzweig Films production stars Michael Ealy, Nicole Beharie (Sleepy Hollow series), Jesse Williams, Joseph Sikora and Guy Burnet.

Jacob Singer is finally getting his life back together after the death of his brother in Afghanistan. He has a beautiful wife, a newborn child, and a successful career as a surgeon in a VA hospital.

When a stranger approaches him and tells him that his brother is actually alive and living in an underground shelter with other homeless vets, Jacob’s life starts to unravel. He begins hallucinating, starts to think he is being followed by violent attackers, and becomes paranoid about the truth of what really happened to his brother…

” …even in its deepest nadir, it is more bland than bad. Leveling out as an inoffensively tame supernatural thriller, “Jacob’s Ladder” is merely a placid potboiler that’s also serviceably watchable in a low investment, disposable entertainment sort of way.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

“What could possibly be the main problem with this film is that it’s using the name of a classic horror movie and it definitely does not compare very well at all. I feel this story would have been more forgivable if they just named it something else and it just wore the “Jacob’s Ladder influences” proudly like so many others.” Zero Lastimosa, Screen Anarchy

DISH premiered Jacob’s Ladder in an exclusive window on Dish July 25, which was followed by a theatrical release on August 23rd via Vertical Entertainment.

Fun Facts:

The title is a reference to a “biblical ladder to heaven, mentioned in Genesis 28:12.”
