Zombieland is a 2009 American zombie comedy film directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom) from a screenplay written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

The movie stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Together they take an extended road trip across the Southwestern United States in an attempt to find a sanctuary free from zombies.

Zombieland received positive critical reviews and was a commercial success, grossing more than $60.8 million in 17 days.

In July 2018, it was confirmed that a sequel, Zombieland: Double-Tap, would begin filming in January 2019 with the same cast and production team.

Plot:

Two months after a mutated strain of mad cow disease has turned most humans into cannibal zombies, unaffected college student “Columbus” (Jesse Eisenberg) is making his way to Columbus, Ohio to see whether his parents are still alive. He encounters “Tallahassee” (Woody Harrelson), another survivor who seeks Twinkies. They travel together.

They later meet “Wichita” (Emma Stone) and her younger, twelve year-old sister “Little Rock” (Abigail Breslin). The sisters were con artists before the catastrophe, and have little trouble tricking the two guys into handing over their weapons and stealing their vehicle.

Later, the two men find a Hummer loaded with weapons, but when they meet the girls again, the girls once more gain the upper hand, taking their weapons and car. Tallahassee manages to wrestle away Little Rock’s gun, resulting in a Mexican standoff. Columbus negotiates a truce…Zombieland [Blu-ray]

Reviews:

“My only concern about Zombieland is how it will hold up on repeat viewings. It’s funny, has likable characters, and features some memorable kills but as most gamers know, multiplayer works best because the path isn’t pre-determined.” Collider

“Though it’s a little light on plot and jeopardy, Zombieland’s distinction is that it’s funny throughout, often screamingly so. Besides Eisenberg’s brilliant Peep Show-style voiceover and surreal /Scrubs/-like digressions, the cast (including Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin as a pair of con-artist sisters) are all accomplished funny people.” Matt Glasby, Games Radar

“Traditionally, zombie films are valued for their satirical qualities, but this one doesn’t aspire to any commentary on our undead commercial society. It does however offer a nice line on Columbus’s emotional frigidity and irrational fear of social contact. These disabilities have equipped him with the neurotically alert caution now needed to stay alive: he may have been a bit of a zombie before the apocalypse, but now his humanity has triumphed.” The Guardian

“This is zombie heaven. The only concerns I had was a few moments with light aliasing, and a recurring orange tone in skin tones, though it wasn’t all that frequent. I’m beyond ecstatic that Zombieland looks this damn good, and while not perfect, it’s sure to impress and satiate fans.” High-Def Digest

“The filmmakers show invention and well-tuned comic timing, and above all, there’s a cameo by Bill Murray that gets the single biggest laugh I’ve heard this year. The foursome hauls up at Murray’s vast Beverly Hills mansion […] More than that I will not say, except that not many zombie comedies can make me think simultaneously about Psycho and Garfield.” Roger Ebert

“Except for a therapeutic-trashing-of-a-tchotchke-store scene the movie could have done without, Zombieland is an exhilarating ride, start to finish. Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg set a high bar for this subgenre with Shaun of the Dead, but Reese, Wernick and Fleischer may have trumped them. This isn’t just a good zombie comedy. It’s a damn fine movie, period.” Time Magazine

“Hardened genre fans (those who aren’t laughing) may feel short-changed by the film’s loose approach to horror convention – it’s more of a droll B-picture like Tremors than, say, Romero’s ‘Dead’ films – but there is plenty of gizzard-chomping mayhem to see them through the brisk runtime.” Time Out

“Cultish slacker cool isn’t something you can work to achieve — you have it or you don’t — and Fleischer is angling for it just a tad too hard. For all the splattery takedowns of groaning extras, it’s fitting that Zombieland ends up in an amusement park, because it basically is one.” The Telegraph

“The best way to really go about making a zombie movie now is to play it for laughs.  Zombieland is the latest in the zombie-comedy subgenre.  It’s got plenty of big chuckles, a smattering of gore, and at least one truly awesome surprise cameo.  As zom-coms go, I’d say it’s better than Fido but not as good as Shaun of the Dead.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

“It takes an NRA, redneck approach to a problem of apocalyptic proportions, and has fun doing it. After watching so many seriously undead in so many serious zombie movies, it’s refreshing to see an old-fashioned shoot ‘em up, where the bullets outnumber the zombies and the survivors are so likable…” Zombos’ Closet of Horror
