The Perished – Ireland, 2019 – reviews

‘It will feed on your guilt and be reborn…’

The Perished is a 2019 Irish supernatural horror feature film about a young woman haunted by the spirits of unwanted souls.

Written and directed by Paddy Murphy, the Celtic Badger Media production stars Courtney McKeon, Fiach Kunz, Conor Lambert, Noelle Clarke and Paul Fitzgerald.

Plot:

Dealing with a pregnancy termination in Ireland has been hard for Sarah Dekker (Courtney McKeon). Shunned by her religious zealot family and after also breaking up with her unforgiving boyfriend, she travels to a sympathetic friend’s house in the country to recover.

Unfortunately, unbeknownst to Sarah, the provincial pile sits atop a mass grave of unwanted babies and their lost, confused spirits want to be reborn. Feeding on guilt and remorse the spirits need a mother. And they just might have found one in Sarah…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Rather than a searing critique of a country and a religion that could allow such heinous crimes to happen, The Perished boils down to a by-the-book story of a woman punished for her decision, which could be seen to undermine its pro-choice slant. Between its kitchen-sink drama and Grand Guignol theatrics, there are two stories fighting for supremacy here, and there’s a pervading sense that neither is truly a man’s to tell.” Sean McGeady, Daily Dead
