Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island is a 2019 American animated film that serves as a follow-up to the 1988 classic Scooby-Doo! on Zombie Island.
Directed by Cecilia Aranovich and Ethan Spaulding from a screenplay by Jeremy Adams (writer of the Lego Scooby-Doo series), the movie features the familiar voice talents of Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo/Fred Jones, Grey Griffin as Daphne Blake, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers and Kate Micucci as Velma Dinkley. Elvira also makes a guest appearance.
Plot:
Scooby-Doo and his pals win an all-expense paid vacation and embark on a trip of a lifetime to a tropical paradise. Their destination, however, turns out to be Zombie Island. As soon as they arrive, they realise the place looks strangely familiar and is reminiscent of a trip they took years ago, in which they became wrapped up in a mystery involving zombies.
The gang soon learns that their trip to paradise comes with a price when the zombies re-emerge and attack their hotel. Will Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang finally solve the mystery behind Zombie Island?
Reviews:
“You would have thought that since there producing a sequel to what many consider the best Scooby-Doo movie that some more effort would have been put into the story and the animation. While there is some effort put into the animation since it does look like a movie there’s none put into the story…” Amino
“As a direct sequel to Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, it doesn’t work. As a Scooby movie on its own, it’s amazing. There’s a lot of callbacks to various Scooby projects, and it’s just plain fun to watch.” Blythe and Ferb
“There’s enough silly-scary in this Scooby adventure to satisfy the basic franchise formula, and it’s fun when the movie sends up Alan Smithee’s “auteur” director, a savvy (if obvious) inside joke. This entry will probably be fine for fans who haven’t seen Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island from 1998.” Common Sense Media
Overall, Scooby-Doo Return to Zombie Island has some fun tidbits and clever moments sprinkled throughout, but it also falters in many areas, particularly as a sequel to the fan-favorite Scooby-Doo! on Zombie Island animated feature which it, unfortunately, pales in comparison to, while also contradicting many elements from the first film in the storyline.” Screen Connections
