DEAD WATER (2019) Reviews and overview

‘Terror goes deeper’

Dead Water is a 2019 American thriller film about an ex-Marine who has to defend his wife and friend from a vicious modern-day pirate.

Produced and directed by Chris Helton from a screenplay by Jason Usry, the Silver Line Films production stars Casper Van Dien (Alpha Wolf; Starship Troopers), Judd Nelson (Bigfoot Wars; The Terror Experiment), Brianne Davis (The Night Visitor) and Griff Furst (prolific director of Cold Moon; Nightmare Shark; Trailer Park Shark; Arachnoquake; et al).

Plot:

When a relaxing getaway turns deadly, a former Marine must risk his life once again to save his wife and best friend from a vicious modern-day pirate; all the while trying to hold himself together as he faces the ghosts of the war he left behind…

Reviews:

“The climactic violent sequences have little to no suspense, with director Helton seemingly unable to stage the action in effective fashion. None of the performers are able to bring life to their schematic characters, although Nelson appears to be having fun as a modern-day pirate.” The Hollywood Reporter

” …while the film has pacing issues and a few clunky moments at the start, the time on the boat before the malice Mclean offers is surprisingly affecting as the emotional battles between them ramp up. Unfortunately, it’s not all that sustainable and begins to take on water the more it keeps going, even with some good performances all around…” That Moment In

” …a tepid VOD-ready melodrama that strikes faint echoes of Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water and Phillip Noyce’s Dead Calm while ponderously padding 60 or so minutes of plot to feature length. Time and again, you may find yourself thinking, “Come on, come on, let’s get going.” Variety
