HELLMINGTON (2019) Reviews and overview

‘Uncovering the truth may kill her

Hellmington is a 2018 American crime mystery film about a mysterious disappearance in a former asylum and the later investigation that uncovers a shocking revelation.

Written and directed by Justin Hewitt-Drakulic and Alex Lee Williams, the movie stars Nicola Correia-Damude, Robin Archer, Morgan Bedard and Michael Ironside.

Plot:
In 1999, outside the sleepy town of Hellmington, troubled high school senior Katie Owens mysteriously vanished.

Nine years later, Detective Samantha Woodhouse, a former classmate of Katie’s, returns to Hellmington for the first time since graduation to deal with the unexpected death of her father. His passing is just another tragedy in an already devastating year for Sam: her own daughter was murdered, resulting in a downward spiral of anguish and guilt that has slowly destroyed her marriage and career.

Sam soon discovers that her father’s demise is one in a series of suspicious deaths over the last several years, and it appears that the grisly fatalities are becoming more frequent. Even more alarming, every victim circles back to the troubled Katie Owens.

Battling hallucinations, insomnia and her own personal demons, Sam struggles to uncover the disturbing truth of what really happened to Katie Owens; a mystery that will lead her to a secretive, centuries-old cult of revenge…

Only Katie never left… that was six years ago, and her disappearance remains unsolved. Police reports stated that a body wasn’t found, no suspicion of foul play and no evidence was discovered.

After many years with no answers, a group of documentary filmmakers decide to join forces with the local police department to investigate and analyze the footage from that night…

Reviews [click links to read more]:
“One of the most frightening films to focus both on crime, the loss of a loved one (sort of) and demonic entities. Everything seems so out-of-place yet somehow fits together in the strangest of ways. The story is well made but you really have to pay attention to what goes on throughout it.” Hollywood North Magazine

“The suspense remains tight throughout (with plenty of well-constructed ramp-ups), the mystery is engaging, and the performances, especially that provided by Correia-Drakulic as Samantha are on-point… especially as the emotional turmoil of her investigation takes its toll on her character’s psyche.” Horror Fuel

“Though Hellmington does ramp up the pace and plot devices towards the end of the flick, it’s hard to overhaul the entire experience after several letdowns and underwhelming outcomes. Hellmington could have been much, much darker and deeper, especially with some of the themes and psychological metaphors, but it never truly went “there.” Horror Society

“This isn’t a fast-paced slasher, and while there are bits of horror here and there, this is rather a bleak chiller that finds its fears not in the cliché but in the darkness of its haunted past. No, it doesn’t always work, but kudos to Hewitt-Drakulic and Williams for the effort, staging some very convincing and effective moments…” That Moment In

“Aside from the imbalance between performances, the film shifts between acting as a cold case drama and acting out as a hardcore horror/thriller ala Mandy. Both styles seem undercooked on their own, and they never meet in the middle to create something new. And because it’s so inconsistent and tedious, Hellmington does nothing but burn its audience.” Wylie Writes

Release:
Hellmington was released on VOD and DVD in North America by Uncork’d Entertainment on September 10th 2019.
