Black is the Night: The Definitive Anthology is a thirty-nine track album by British punk-goth-psychedelic rock band The Damned, to be released on BMG in the UK on 1st November 2019. Herer’s the blurb:

“Legendary band The Damned were the first UK punk band to release a single back in 1976. Along with the Sex Pistols and the Clash, they helped to spearhead the punk movement in the UK.

As their career developed they became one of the first gothic rock bands and were a major influence on the goth subculture. They’ve had nine UK Top 40 hit singles during their illustrious career and their latest album ‘Evil Spirits’ was their first top ten album upon its release last year.

This new anthology will be the first-ever, spanning the band’s career and fully curated by them.

Features five Top 40 singles including 1986’s hit ‘Eloise’
‘New Rose’ was the first single released by a UK punk band
‘Neat, Neat, Neat’ also features on the critically-acclaimed soundtrack of 2017 film Baby Driver

The selection, which is obviously beyond a ‘Best Of’, includes pretty much all the songs fans would expect plus obscurity – ‘Fun Factory’ – and a new one, the title track, to tempt the uninitiated.

Purists might lament the lack of the band’s gloriously raucous reworking of MC5’s ‘Looking At You’ but there are their hit versions of ‘Eloise’ and ‘Alone Again Or’ which are obviously better known, plus their pill-popping take on Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’.

It’s a purchase we wholeheartedly recommend, especially if you looking to pick up an early Christmas present for culturally depraved friends or relatives.
