I SCREAM ON THE BEACH! (2020) Reviews of British horror – now free to watch online

‘Wave goodbye to your life’
I Scream on the Beach! is a 2020 British horror film about a gas-masked maniac stalking a small seaside town.

Written and directed by Alexander Churchyard and Michael Holiday, based on a story by Max Davenport, the TIS Productions movie stars Hannah Paterson, Dani Thompson (My Bloody Banjo), Reis Daniel (There’s No Such Thing as Zombies) and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman.

Plot:
In the small seaside town of Mellow Coast, Emily (Hannah Paterson) is trying to discover what has happened to her father, but as she searches for answers her friends start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown killer…

Reviews:
There is some comedy here but I Scream on the Beach! doesn’t pander to it and become slapstick. There are some memorable kills and also commendable practical effects that recalls the golden age of the slasher […] I Scream on the Beach! may be the best British slasher in living memory.” Bloody Flicks

“Ok it does occasionally stray into ‘Garth Marenghi’ territory – the whole thing is voice synced in post which allows for some hilarious bit part performances – and the payoff is just daft. But this is a resourceful, staggeringly inventive film, which is already on course for one of my favourites of the year.” Dark Eyes of London

“Though the VHS effect can feel a bit gimmicky at times, and not every joke lands, I Scream on the Beach! is still an amusing, effective film full of silly heart and odd humor perfectly at home in the bygone slashers of which it emulates. There’s a warm, willing cast and enough decent gags to make it worth a watch…” Killer Horror Critic

“Yes, it’s cheese but it’s the cheese we love and remember so in this case it’s bad acting but it’s intentional!! […] Keep your eyes open for the infamous Lloyd Kaufman. Hannah Paterson is wonderful as our unsuspecting heroine Emily […] I just thought the cast were all firing on all cylinders.” Nerdly

“The plot is unexpectedly engaging, although there is a twist that comes out of nowhere and unleashes the movie’s inner Troma […]. As in often the case, many of the gags fall as flat as the puny title, and the ‘VHS effect’ gets a bit wearing as the film goes on, but there are enough amusing moments to make it worth your while.” Starburst

I Scream On the Beach! never forgets to stay entertaining as a film first and be a homage second. Too many films get caught up in the retro aspect and forget to deliver an actual storyline. That’s not an issue here as the plot is interesting and builds to a delightfully warped final act.” Voices from the Balcony

Background:
“We’ve based the look of the film on our favourite horror movies, from both our childhoods, that we rented from the video shop on VHS, and classics we’ve discovered as adults,” said Holiday and Churchyard. “The film uses a lot of practical effects, and even features appearances from some familiar faces to low-budget horror fans, such as Lloyd Kaufman from Troma. This was a real coup for us and we were really excited to have his support on the film.”

Release:
I Scream on the Beach! had its world premiere at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival, in Southend on Sea, on January 12th, 2020.
