THE WOLF HOUR (2019) Reviews and overview

The Wolf Hour is a 2019 psychological thriller film about a paranoid woman stuck inside a New York apartment in 1977 with violence all around.

Written and directed by Alistair Banks Griffin, the movie stars Naomi Watts, Brennan Brown, Jennifer Ehle and Kelvin Harrison Jr.

Plot:

June was once a known counterculture figure, but that was a decade ago. She now lives alone in her South Bronx apartment, having all but cut herself off from the outside world.

Meanwhile, it’s the notorious “Summer of Sam” and June only has to look out of her window to see the violence escalating with the brutal summer heat. The city is on a knife’s edge, a pressure-cooker about to explode into the incendiary 1977 New York blackout riots…

Reviews:

“Set in a messy flat with low light, grim feel, and trashy interior, Wolf Hour finely captures the sense of isolation of its anxious, agoraphobic, broke, and disturbed protagonist, portrayed brilliantly by the remarkable Naomi Watts, whose devoted ‘one-woman show’ turn as the struggling author June make this subtle, yet riveting mental journey so affecting…” CineMarvellous!

“The set-up impresses, but the pay-off is lacking in Wolf Hour. A great deal of craftsmanship went into the production, but the script should have gone through further revisions. The results are decidedly mixed, but Watts’ star turn should guarantee considerable fest play and eventual distribution for The Wolf Hour…” Criminal Element

“I felt like the plot continuously moved forward as June (Naomi Watts) kept pushing herself – or was being pushed by circumstance. To other viewers, it might appear as though nothing is happening because we never really leave the apartment. We do look out the window though.” Heaven of Horror

“The atmospheric ambitions of the story only falter by the end, as The Wolf Hour doesn’t wrap itself up with brilliance in its 15 minutes. But as The Wolf Hour is engrossing for much of its anxious timeline, it’s the inner journey Watts provides that sticks with you most of all.” RogerEbert.com
