Black Glasses – Italy, 2020 – preview of new Dario Argento Giallo

Black Glasses aka Occhiali neri is a 2020 Italian Giallo horror-thriller feature film directed by Dario Argento scheduled to begin shooting this Spring.

With a screenplay apparently co-written with Franco Ferrini and Carlo Lucarelli, the Claudio Argento produced movie will star the director’s daughter Asia Argento (Mother of Tears; The Stendhal Syndrome; Trauma). No plot details are available at present.

Before Argento fanboys and girls get too excited, let us not forget that his last project The Sandman, with Iggy Pop as the protagonist, has languished in development since 2014 so the announcement of Black Glasses doesn’t mean that it will go into production.

Prior to this new project, Dario’s last film was the appallingly laughable Dracula 3D, the dreary Giallo (2009) and the lamentable late-in-the-day sequel The Mother of Tears (2007). Before that, he hadn’t made a semi-decent movie since Sleepless in 2001, nearly twenty years ago.

More tellingly, when the career retrospective FAB Press book Fear: The Autobiography of Dario Argento was launched at last year’s FrightFest in London, the film that was chosen to highlight his influence on genre cinema was… Tenebrae, made in 1982.

At least Dario hated Luca Guadagnino’s dull and meandering 2018 remake of his daffy yet delirious cult classic Suspiria, so we can only hope that Black Glasses (if it gets made), is a return to form after so many duds. Alas, we suspect not.
