It has been announced that Sam Raimi, whose last horror directorial outing as on the Ash vs. Evil Dead series in 2015 (he has been producing movies such as Crawl since) will be taking over the director’s chair for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from the previously announced Scott Derrickson. Shooting will begin in May.
Variety has also reported that “Benedict Cumberbatch is returning as the Sorcerer Supreme after his 2016 debut, and subsequent appearances in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also expected to reprise their roles from the original film as, respectively, fellow sorcerer Wong and Strange’s compatriot-turned-nemesis Karl Mordo. And Elizabeth Olsen has been tapped to reprise her role as Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, for a storyline that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said will link up with her Disney Plus series “WandaVision,” which will debut in December.”
Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us from Evil; The Exorcism of Emily Rose; Sinister) will serve as executive producer on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which take the essence of the original comics and emphasizes “the gothic, the horror.” He also said this will be “the first scary MCU film.”
Previously, Variety reported that Derrickson intimated that Benedict Cumberbatch will be taken to dark and damaging places, though he will be accompanied by Elizabeth Olsen (who looked resplendent at SDCC in a black leather dress), as she will reprise her role as Scarlet Witch.
Doctor Strange (2016), told the origin story of the superhero, and somewhat arrogant doctor, who is drawn to the world of mystic arts after an unfortunate accident. After searching the world over to find a way to heal himself, he eventually discovers himself under the tutelage of The Ancient One, who trains him in the mystic arts. Having become the Sorcerer Supreme, he must battle dark forces from our world and other realms.
