SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2020) Reviews and overview

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2020 American fantasy action film about a small, blue, fast hedgehog and an evil genius who wants to do experiments on it. The plot is loosely based on the Sega video game of the same name.

The movie had to be extensively reworked when fans reacted badly to the initial design of Sonic.

Directed by Jeff Fowler from a screenplay written by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, based on the characters created by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara. The movie stars Ben Schwartz (as the voice of Sonic), Tika Sumpter, James Marsden and Jim Carrey.

Reviews:

Giant plot hole aside I was smiling from ear to ear throughout. I had an absolute ball watching Sonic! The effects, the comedy and the outstanding performance of Jim Carrey all combined to create arguably my favorite video game adaptation movie. I only wish it lasted longer.” Back to the Movies

“A nice dig at Mario aside, the movie is aware that settling for an empty feeling isn’t enough. Sure, this might be better than the Super Mario Bros. movie from back in the day, but agreeing this is the best ‘90s video game movie is still damning with the faintest of praise.” Den of Geek!

“Watching Carrey in Sonic the Hedgehog is like watching a drunk try to jumpstart a party that was well and truly dead upon his arrival. Unfortunately, Carrey’s laborious efforts only make things worse. I don’t know that Sonic the Hedgehog was ever salvageable, because ultimately, everything in it, including the good stuff, is depressing.” RogerEbert.com

“They run around (the main character at characteristically high speeds), things go boom, the kids are entertained, and it’s not horrible. If your hopes and expectations going into Sonic the Hedgehog were anything surpassing that, you’re looking in the wrong place, and have may’ve been playing too many video games.” Screen Anarchy

“For those who aren’t necessarily fans of Sonic or Carrey’s classic performances, Sonic the Hedgehog doesn’t have much else to offer and can easily be missed in theaters. But considering the winter drought, those looking for something fun to check out won’t go wrong with Sonic the Hedgehog.” Screen Rant

“Jeff Fowler’s film is exciting (Sonic vs. Robotnik gadgetry action), it’s funny (trust in Ben Schwartz), and successfully brings Sonic to a whole new generation of audiences who couldn’t tell a SEGA Genesis console from a paperweight. As both a movie critic and Sonic supporter, I assure you my post-screening smile required no additional CGI touchups.” We Got This Covered
