CORONA ZOMBIES (2020) Reviews of Full Moon’s opportunistic trash

Corona Zombies is a 2020 American satirical horror film from Full Moon Features. It premiered exclusively on the Full Moon Features channel and app on April 10th, 2020. It was widely available on Amazon Prime from April 20th.

The film extensively re-uses footage from Bruno Mattei’s Italian-Spanish trash movie Hell of the Living Dead (1980), plus Zombies vs. Strippers (2012).

Plot:

A government is asleep at the wheel! The wealthy shrugging it off! And a virus that causes its victims to get up and kill! The people they kill… get up and kill.”

Corona Zombies will be available on Full Moon’s digital entertainment platforms, including Amazon Prime and the Full Moon Features channel and app, on April 10th, 2020.

In a famous interview with Katherine Kuh, Surrealist Marcel Duchamp said “I consider taste – bad or good – the greatest enemy of art.” The Artist’s Voice, p92, Harper and Row, N.Y. 1960. But is this even vaguely art?

Our long-time contributor David Flint’s take on Corona Zombies – in which he climbs onto a surprisingly moralist high-horse not usually associated with his normally libertarian yet cynical views, has wearily described the ‘movie’ as “bottom of the barrel opportunism” – see his site The Reprobate

Reviews:

“Corona Zombies is dumb fun, with a capital “dumb.” And for the most part, that’s OK. After all, the news anymore is so ridiculous, so “what the f*ck” worthy that I’m half-convinced it can’t get any stranger than fiction than it already is. And besides, it’s only an hour-long film. If you watch it and don’t care for it, you’ve not lost a lot of your time.” Crypt Teaze

“I’m offended by Corona Zombies because it’s an insult to movies and to moviegoers […] New footage looks like it was shot on a phone in less time than it takes to nuke a Hot Pocket. There’s so little quality control that simple details like the name of a key location can’t be kept straight. And with a runtime that barely brushes 60 minutes, Charles Band once again suggests he’s content to only deliver the bare minimum amount of content to qualify as a feature.” Culture Crypt

“The over-the-top satire takes on the incompetence of the world leaders […] while also making sure to take on the protestors who think social distancing is more detrimental than the deadly pandemic. At the same time, Corona Zombies lovingly pokes fun at the very Italian zombie genre it’s remixing.” Film School Rejects

“The story for this one is satire in its purest form. Band makes fun of the Gen Z’s spring breaking, spoiled millennials that ignore the news, and world politics all in one swoop. We then get the glorious dubbing over the Hell of the Living Dead scenes. With all that being said, the humor does wear pretty thin by the 30 minute mark. The film clocks in around an hour but you find yourself waiting for it to end anytime after the 30 minutes.” Horror Society

Corona Zombies tries to be a deliberately tasteless comedy. And, as films such as The Toxic Avenger have proven that can not only work but be hysterically funny. However, this film forgot to provide the comedy and is just tasteless. The irony here is, the English dubbing of Hell of the Living Dead was frequently unintentionally funnier than what they replaced it with.” Voices from the Balcony
