BEHIND YOU (2020) Reviews and overview

‘Mirror, mirror, open wide…’
Behind You is a 2020 American supernatural horror film about two young sisters that have to fend off a malicious demon.

Written and directed by Andrew Mecham and Matthew Whedon (The Nameless Days), the Parallelogram-Tremendum Pictures production stars Addy Miller, Elizabeth Birkner, Jan Broberg and Philip Brodie.

Plot:
Two young sisters, sent to live with their estranged Aunt, find that all the mirrors in her house are covered or hidden. When one of the sisters happens upon a mirror in the basement, she unknowingly releases a malicious demon that had haunted her mother and aunt years ago…

Reviews:
“Although it might be the fault of the clunky dialogue the actors are asked to sell rather than the actors themselves, most of the performances come off flat as well. It’s safe to say not even the easily spooked will be checking their back or losing sleep over this one. Tedious and ineffective, Behind You is a competently made first film but nothing more.” The Artful Critic

Behind You goes more for an eeriness than an outright horrifying experience, and is, therefore, much more digestible than more extreme films of the genre. But don’t write Behind You off. It’s a well-done film that moves at breakneck speed to deliver a story that utilizes demonic possession and family secrets to set a tone.” Cryptic Rock

“Despite a few solid scares and some eerie ambience, Behind You doesn’t offer much of interest. It looks nice and the filmmakers use the massive, sprawling house to decent effect, and at one point, Claire’s stuffed bunny seems to control her, which is fun. But there’s little earnest tension, the performances play flat and hollows and characters make inane, unrealistic choices…” The Last Thing I See

“Even with some standout moments in the first half, when the dust settles Behind You is just not memorable enough. It has a bunch of cliché horror elements – creepy house with a mysterious past, demons, mirrors being gateways for evil, and that evil focusing on one child. The problem is we’ve seen these time and time again and Behind You does not add enough to the mix to separate it from its predecessors.” Punch Drunk Critics

“With the film’s performances ranging from undercooked to overcooked, even before it gets to scenes of screaming characters running away from randomly slamming doors, Behind You is uncertain about what worthwhile ends all of its hand-holding dialogue will lead the viewer will lead to.” RogerEbert.com

“Its bland color palette, coupled with its generic script, can’t summon up enough energy to reel in its audience from the very beginning. Not to mention, the actors’ lack of enthusiasm for the production itself can be felt pretty heavily while watching, contributing to the film’s uninspired overall tone. As a whole, Behind You‘s brief moments of creativity are faint glimmers of light that can’t quite stand out in the pitch dark, making this fright-fest a forgettable feature.” Screen Rant
