LONG LOST (2018) Reviews and overview

‘Life is how you see it.’

Long Lost is a 2018 psychological thriller film about a young man invited to spend a strange weekend with his half-brother and live-in girlfriend.

Written and directed by Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight; Alien Warfare; shorts: She Came from the Woods; Ghost Tour; Midnight Brew) from a storyline co-written with Carson Bloomquist and Adam Weppler.

The Mainframe Pictures production stars Adam Weppler (Ten Minutes to Midnight; Alien Warfare), Catherine Corcoran (3 Days Rising; 100 Acres of Hell; Terrifier), Nicholas Tucci (Come Home; The Ranger; You’re Next) and Fran Kranz (Bloodsucking Bastards; The Cabin in the Woods).

Plot:

Seth (Adam Weppler) is a young man invited to spend a long weekend at a Connecticut mansion with his long lost millionaire half-brother Richard (Nicholas Tucci) who lives with his enigmatic live-in girlfriend Abby (Catherine Corcoran)…

Reviews:

“Bloomquist cleverly subverts certain expectations of the standard erotic thriller and purposefully plays into others, making things feel familiar at times but then often leaving the audience with a playfully strange sense of ambiguity.” Father Son Holy Gore

“The best decision Bloomquist makes is keeping all the proceedings light or at least with an undercurrent of lightness even when things flirt with darkness. Especially towards the end when things escalate and get out of hand rather quickly with Seth’s understandable reactions to his ordeals providing a certain degree of humor to the over the top developments.” Film Pulse

“[With] exquisite direction, the film is a head-spinning thriller … Bloomquist consistently finds a way to up the ante in a believable, yet nerve-wracking way … that will get under everyone’s skin.” Film Threat

“Most problematically, the film features a final act twist, including the introduction of a new character, that is seemingly designed to throw everything preceding it into an entirely new light. The revelation lacks the intended dramatic punch and doesn’t even make a whole lot of sense.” The Hollywood Reporter

“A slow-burning drama with psychological trauma at every corner, Long Lost is puzzling and mildly disturbing […] Great direction, riveting performances and an uncomfortably enthralling story.” Horror Society

“writer-director Erik Bloomquist keeps the audience as unsettled as his hero with an intense atmosphere that turns even a game of “Chubby Bunny” into something sinister. With its good use of a single location and just three characters, Long Lost almost works, though its fun twist would have felt fresher a decade ago.” Los Angeles Times

Unpredictable and effectively atmospheric throughout, Long Lost proves a captivating and cagey slow-burn thriller … The film plays a clever and bold game of brinksmanship that sees the more ridiculous moments actually play into its brilliant intrigue, fostering genuine unpredictability as seemingly anything can happen next.” Mad Movie Man

“Competently made, well-acted and I enjoyed it but I suspect people will expect more from the film. However, it takes the film a long time to not get where we are going – until the last 15 minutes suddenly speed up and tie things up in an unsatisfying and illogical way.” Nerdly

“Overall, Long Lost was a surprisingly enjoyable film. It does have a handful of issues, but the story is intriguing and the execution of solid. This is the type of hidden gem that will likely find success from people discovering it on streaming services.” Pop Axiom

“[With] delicious twists and turns … Bloomquist not only rather brilliantly ratchets up the tension and stakes, [but] also proves adept at building a lush, surrealist-yet-believable world wherein philosophical questions can be pondered and grappled.” Rue Morgue

“Tucci is the embodiment of the psychological part, his intensity and restrained insanity make him steal his scenes, with Corcoran playing the temptress. This is a movie that I know is going to stay with me long after the credits had rolled.” The Rotting Zombie

“This is a movie that relies entirely on one character doing and following a very specific set of actions that if were to be different in any way would never allow the script to work. And a finale that tries hard to be clever and perhaps offer some commentary on a certain corner of entertainment but doesn’t have the shock it intends…” That Moment In

“Shot almost entirely inside a beautiful Connecticut mansion Long Lost has a feeling of claustrophobia, of being trapped, no matter how luxurious the trap may be. This just intensifies as things build toward an ending you won’t see coming. I’m not going to spoil it, just be ready to be shocked.” Voices from the Balcony
