Deep Blue Sea 3 2020 movie reviews

‘Deadlier than ever’
Deep Blue Sea 3 is a 2020 American action-horror film directed by John Pogue (Eraser: Reborn; The Quiet Ones; Quarantine 2: Terminal) from a screenplay written by Dirk Blackman (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans; Outlander; Black Mask 2: City of Masks).

The Roserock Films production stars Tania Raymonde (Texas Chainsaw; Chillerama), Nathaniel Buzolic (The Vampire Diaries), Emerson Brooks and Bren Foster. It was produced by Theuns De Wet, Hunt Lowry and Patty Reed.

Although Deep Blue Sea 2 had fairly tepid reviews, it obviously did well enough for Warner Bros to have greenlit a second sequel. It was released on July 28th 2020 on Digital and August 25th 2020 as a Blu-ray + DVD combo.

The movie was rated R by the MPAA for “some violence, bloody images, and language.”

Plot:
Doctor Emma Collins (Tania Raymonde) and her team are spending their third summer on the sinking island of Little Happy studying the effect of climate change on the great white sharks who come to the nearby nursery every year to give birth.

Along with the last two inhabitants of this former fishing village, their peaceful life is disrupted when a “scientific” team led by her ex-boyfriend and marine biologist Richard (Nathaniel Buzolic) show up looking for three bull sharks who we soon learn aren’t just any bull sharks…

Reviews:
” …if you have a weakness for sharks and don’t mind some tongue-in-cheek humor with your aquatic horror, Deep Blue Sea 3 serves up a surprisingly charming action spectacle. You may not remember too much about it after, but it’s an easily digestible thrill ride while it lasts.” Bloody Disgusting

“It’s pretty much impossible to replicate the combination of committed performances, well-crafted special effects, amusing dialogue, and stylish violence that made the original Deep Blue Sea so entertaining, and even at its best, Deep Blue Sea 3 is just a pale imitation. It does feature a character repeatedly punching a shark in the face, though, and that counts for something.” CBR

“While it still brings the goofiness and cheese, it’s definitely a step up from the previous film in pretty much every way. Frankly, much as I love movie/monster movies, I wasn’t looking forward to this one based off of Deep Blue Sea 2. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised.” Cinelinx

” …from its inane ‘brain-advanced super-smart bull sharks’ premise and implausible scientific explanations to the over-the-top kill scenes and questionable acting, Deep Blue Sea 3 ends up as a mediocre, unnecessary sequel that provides too much drama and action above the surface and only some mild thrills below it.” CineMarvellous!

“Weirdly and disappointingly, the film doesn’t have nearly as much underwater action as one would expect. Sharks only slaughter one hapless victim in the film’s first forty minutes […] The meantime mostly fills up on climate change mumbo jumbo, establishing technology that comes into play later, and scientists staring at colored blobs on computer screens.” Culture Crypt

“I have to say, I really enjoyed Deep Blue Sea 3. It’s a fun flick with pretty much everything you need to make a good creature feature, action, drama, blood, and villainous creatures, and it’s a bit educational as well. It exceeded my expectations, so I’m going to give it a 5 out of 5.” Horror Fuel

“Sure, there’s plenty of horrific bloodshed in the latter half of the movie but the film spends far too long setting up the action instead of diving headfirst into the bloody waters. Deep Blue Sea 3 never really finds its stride […] It starts out as an ecological warning and quickly shifts to a horror movie, without really hitting the beats for either genre.” Meaww

“A good one-time watchable track, watch this without much expectation about the bloody and thrilling scenes.” Movie Laundry

Deep Blue Sea 3 looks like it used the same CGI as the original did back in 1999. I know this is a product of Warner Brothers’ cheap home entertainment division, but they could at least have sprung for up to date effects. Beyond that Deep Blue Sea 3 is the kind of gory fun this summer needed.” Voices from the Balcony
