Hatching is a 2020 Finnish coming-of-age body horror feature film about a young gymnast who desperately tries to please her obsessive mother. Having discovered an unusual egg, the girl hides it and keeps it warm. What eventually emerges is shocking beyond belief.
Directed by Hanna Bergholm – making her feature debut – from a screenplay written by Ilja Rautsi, the Silva Mysterium Oy production stars Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkila, Jani Volanen, Oiva Ollila and Reino Nordin.
Gustav Hoegen, a veteran of Star Wars, Jurassic World and Prometheus, designed the animatronics while special effects make-up were provided by Conor O’Sullivan (Game of Thrones, X-Men: First Class).
Director Hanna Bergholm commented: ”We had an amazing international crew during our production, and I’m very happy that all their work will receive the recognition it deserves. This partnership just further proves to us that the story of Hatching is truly universal.”
IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights with their executive vice-president of acquisitions and productions Arianna Bocco explaining: “It falls in the canon of classic coming-of-age stories that terrify you.” She added that Hatching is reminiscent of The Babadook and Raw. IFC Midnight will premiere the movie at a major international festival in 2021 before releasing it theatrically and on VOD platforms.

After we posted about this movie earlier today, Bloody Disgusting has now also featured the film adding the info: “a birdlike creature is hatched and Tinja names it Alli and hides it in her closet. She feeds the bird vomit and it gradually transforms into Tinja’s doppelganger. “Tinja’s buried aggression and jealousy pushes Alli into increasingly violent attacks until no one is safe.”
