Reviews:

The Suicide Squad is a bold and visually stunning grand spectacle that relentlessly alternates moments of humor, action, emotion but also moments of poetry suspended in the midst of the carnage. Because behind gallons of digital blood, torn limbs and cruel deaths there is always a candid, almost Disney-style form of emotion. James Gunn composes spectacular sequences that each have their own identity full of innovation and visual gags.” Les Chroniques de Cliffhanger & Co [translated from French]

” …with as much zaniness as there is in this flick (I haven’t even gotten to the giant starfish!), it’s hard for any single element to really overshadow the others for long. The movie is so overstuffed with ideas and gags, it’s downright overwhelming at times. For some that will be a detriment, but that Gunn is able to keep all the balls in the air and manages to make most of these misfits engaging, and even endearing, is its greatest asset.” Den of Geek

“What’s impressive is that with carte blanche to “kill anyone”, Gunn hasn’t gone for the cheap, shock kill. Yes, some deaths are inherently funnier than others, but there’s also genuine emotion in some of the exits that few comic book movies manage. Gunn cares about these characters and spends time with them to make sure that you care too […] It allows Gunn to tell his own story and he throws everything at it as though it’s his one-and-only DC shot (it won’t be though, surely).” Digital Spy

The Suicide Squad takes the familiar superhero genre and completely subverts all expectations, delivering a fun, over-the-top, and extremely violent adventure which will be cherished for years to come. James Gunn once again put his unique stamp on the genre…” Dread Central

“It would be enough for this just to be a very funny action-comedy, but Gunn also puts in some light-touch criticism of America’s role in international affairs. The gang kills first and asks questions later. Peacemaker, like a very right-wing Captain America, believes in “peace at any cost”. Gunn shows that you can have something to say while still delivering great gags. By embracing this deeply weird idea, he’s produced the most enjoyable DC movie in years.” Empire

“There is Guardians-style comedy mixing humans and talking animals, there is freaky violence – including what I have to say is a gruesomely impressive interior-anatomical shot, showing a knife plunging into the still-beating heart – and there is colossal CGI spectacle for the final act in which a giant thing runs rampant in a city, while the gang look up at it; a trope that has become almost legally mandatory for superhero movies.” The Guardian

“James Gunn absolutely kills it with The Suicide Squad. The film is a bloody, chaotic ride from start to finish that finally does justice to Task Force X. It’s endlessly shocking and funny, and its showcase of F-list DC villains is nothing short of brilliant.” IGN

“The violence and the outrageousness alone aren’t what makes The Suicide Squad tick – it’s Gunn’s understanding of the transgressive power of the outsider figure. The director, who also has sole credit for the film’s script, has scoured the wildest and weirdest corners of comic book history to fill his own beefed-up platoon. His film provides a firm critique of the kind of imperialism often tethered to the genre…” Independent (UK)

The Guardians of the Galaxy-style goofiness mixed in with lingering shots of maimed lasagne-like innards feels queasy and all wrong; it’s like someone exposing themselves at a wedding. In the interest of being charitable, there are some good actors here – Elba, Robbie, and Cena chief among them. Robbie’s Quinn […] is the best thing about the movie by a country mile. The screen lights up with her red-gowned, machine-gun-toting presence, but even she cannot save this movie.” iNews

“The film works as well as it does at least in part because Gunn and his collaborators don’t seem overly concerned with justifying any of it. Will the audience accept a battle with a Godzilla-sized starfish? Who cares? Let’s call him Starro the Conqueror and give him a mad scientist keeper played by Peter Capaldi. In a genre hooked on formula, moments such as these make The Suicide Squad feel like a gust of nitrous oxide-laced fresh air.” The Telegraph (UK)
