2067 (2020) reviews of inspiring time travel sci-fi pic

‘The fight for the future has begun’

2067 is a 2020 Australian science-fiction film about a simple underground tunnel worker whose destiny is to save a dying world. Released in the UK as Chronical: 2067

Written and directed by Seth Larney (Tombiruo) from a screenplay with additional material by Dave Paterson, the movie stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ryan Kwanten, Leeanna Walsman and Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ryan Kwanten, and Deborah Mailman.

Plot:

By the year 2067, Earth has been ravaged by global warming and climate change and humanity is forced to live on artificial oxygen. An illness caused by the synthetic O2 is killing the worlds’ population and the only hope for a cure comes in the form of a message from the future: “Send Ethan Whyte”.

Ethan, an underground tunnel worker, is suddenly thrust into a terrifying new world full of unknown danger as he must fight to save the human race…

Reviews:

” …Kodi Smit-McPhee gives a winningly determined performance, resilient to give up, and always pushing forward putting the pieces together. Even if the story is basic sci-fi stuff, 2067 is certainly always pleasant to look at and zips along with urgency and brainy thrills.” Flickering Myth

“The movie explores some interesting ideas and has enough twists to keep you interested. At times you can tell that the budget was less than your typical blockbuster movie which somewhat limits the number of locations and action sequences […] The actors and characters are also pretty good.” Geeky Hobbies

“I could have done without the onslaught of tears, but liked the story’s sophistication. The puzzle comes together for an exhilarating, surprisingly deliberative finale. The line between faith and science is not always clear. Both are needed to achieve the extraordinary, especially when facing the dire consequences of climate change.” Movieweb

“It’s the first thoughtful science fiction film of 2020 to make me have hope that the dumpster fire that has been this year still has some secrets worth knowing. If for nothing else, 2067 is dazzling to look at, and Smit-McPhee gives a winsome performance as a determined hero.” Signal Horizon

” …it remains the tragedy of our cinematic era that it is apparently easy to conjure up impressive visual elements, yet conversely very hard to write a screenplay that doesn’t feel indifferently sewn together from several prior better ones — or in which people feel like rounded individuals rather than genre stick figures.” Variety

“It’s interesting to watch all the pieces fall into place as Ethan figures out what is going on and how it connects with his past. Yes, being able to guess chunks of it took the edge off of my enjoyment, but there was still enough that I didn’t guess to keep me interested. And, surprisingly, for a film that runs just under two hours, it doesn’t drag.” Voices from the Balcony

Release:

RLJE will release 2067 in the USA theatrically, On-Demand and on Digital on October 2nd 2020. Signature Entertainment releases the film On-Demand on December 7th 2020.

Background:

Writer-director Seth Larney has stated: “I grew up in the forest in Australia. My days were filled with exploring rivers and trees and caves – it was the only life I knew as a child. With everything that is happening around us in the world today, the environmental crisis, our deforestation of the planet for greed in the face of catastrophic climate change – the fear that future generations may not have the same privilege, terrifies me.

I also grew up a huge fan of the classic sci-fi movies of the ’70s and ’80s. These character-driven epic adventures showed me that there is more out there in the universe than what I could see with just my own eyes. Stories that suggested we are part of something bigger than ourselves, that we are all connected, that the great human journey is worth sharing together.

For me, filmmaking is an opportunity to have a conversation about something important – in this case, our faith in our own humanity; our ability to affect change as individuals in the face of genuine fear; and how we learn to forgive those who came before us, and who’ve left destruction in their path.

How much control do we have over our lives and our futures? In the face of the environmental and political change that is being portrayed in the media, people can feel powerless. Do we accept what we hear in the news and or do we fight to restore our belief in the life we’ve built on Earth and our ability to have a positive impact on the world around us?

I wanted to make a movie that suggests that these questions about the human experience are important, and wrap them up in a fun, epic, sci-fi adventure, like the ones that moved me so much as a kid. The kinds of genre films that infused entertainment with big questions – ones that we take our own personal meaning from.

2067 is about the idea that even though we may not have proof that our small, selfless acts affect change in the world, that if we truly believe in ourselves and in the people around us, if we believe that it is never too late, then we can do anything.”
