FUGUE (2018) reviews and overview of dark psychological thriller

‘Who do you think you are?’

Fugue is a 2018 Canadian psychological thriller film about an amnesiac man and his wife dealing with a gang of intruders at their home.

Written and directed by Tomas Street – making his feature debut – the Rock Street North production stars Jack Foley (Lifechanger), Laura Tremblay (Drowning; Lifechanger), Mike Donis (Lifechanger; Late Night Double Feature; Save Yourself), Kristen Da Silva, Michael Lipka and Evan Siemann.

Plot:

Malcolm (Jack Foley) awakes, unsure of where or who he is. Helen (Laura Tremblay), his wife, struggles to remind him of the man she needs him to be.

When their friend Ian (Mike Donis) pays a surprise visit Malcolm begins suspecting things are not entirely as they seem. His wife and friend may not be telling the whole story. Just as Malcolm’s persona comes into sharper focus, masked intruders put everyone’s lives in danger. The truth will come out, one way or another…

Reviews:

“As the story attempts to disorient the viewer in the first half of the film, they leave just enough breadcrumbs for the audience to follow to a satisfying conclusion […] If you’re looking for a psychological heist movie that looks great and keeps you on the edge of your seat, Fugue is a refreshing take on the genre.” Geek Hard

“Street is totally having one over on viewers, but since he shows respect for our intelligence, we don’t mind be played for fools, so to speak. He and co-editor Sean Danby, along with the continuity person deserve enormous credit for hiding all the seams. Highly recommended for fans of dark, twisty psychological thrillers…” J.B. Spins

“Jack Foley […] did not disappoint in the fluid lead role that changes with the story from act to act. I’m gaga for Laura Tremblay’s performance as Helen, who absolutely blew me away on screen and gave a performance that would hold up and deliver even more depth on a re-watch […] Fugue is compelling and exhilarating.” Nightmarish Conjurings

“The choices, score and dialogue all come together at the end. The film reminded me of an indie version of Panic Room. One of the strengths is the weight that Jack Foley brings to his character […] Fugue is a tense, uneasy thriller that will hook you once you give it a chance. It’s brave, and frankly, very impressive for a debut film.” Pop Horror

“Street has made a very good first impression with Fugue. He’s shown he has the talent to pull off a tricky thriller and get the kind of performances it needs from the cast. He’s also shown he can deliver on a minuscule budget, something that’s probably even more important when it comes to indie filmmaking.” Voices from the Balcony
