VICTIM OF LOVE (2019) Reviews and overview of Danish horror-thriller

Victim of Love is a 2019 Danish horror thriller film about a man searching for his missing girlfriend in a Copenhagen hotel.

Written and directed by Jesper Isaksen – making his feature debut – with Sonny Lahey as the story consultant, the Bleed For This Picture production stars Rudi Køhnke, Siff Andersson, Louise Cho and Paw Terndrup.

Plot:

Charly (Rudi Køhnke) is looking for his American girlfriend, Amy (Paw Terndrup), who disappeared under mysterious circumstances during a vacation stay at a hotel in Copenhagen. A few months later, Charly decides to revisit the hotel to finally solve the mystery once and for all.

However, Charly’s investigation is quickly derailed by the mysterious and flirtatious receptionist, Felicija (Siff Andersson), and his own gradually failing judgment that leads him into a phantasmagorical nightmare…

Reviews:

“Isaksen loses points by having the majority of his female characters appear as prostitutes […] But there’s no denying that, on a low budget, he has created a world that looks amazing, is full of odd and intriguing characters, and doesn’t shy away from the icky stuff. Cautious thumbs up then.” Bloody Flicks

“The film’s message becomes a bit brushed off and less subtle towards the end and can be quite slow in its pace at times, but as the final scenes approach, it unites as a coherent story, both in symbolism and action. Victim of Love is a rather unique film. Beautiful. Aesthetic. Confident. Hypnotic.” ET Movie Diner [translated from Danish]

“All in all, Victim of Love is a visually beautiful film that is a delight to the eye for any film lover. It’s exciting, and the sound really keeps one captivated. However, it all falls a bit to the ground, due to the flimsy and predictable story that has a hard time keeping its audience engaged. The acting by Rudi Køhnke is, however, top-notch.” Filmpuls [translated from Danish]

” …a complex film that rewards viewers with its bold flair, stirring visuals and cinematography, and captivating performances. It’s a hallucinatory trip well worth taking.” Horror Fuel

The story of the guy who searches for his missing girlfriend and gets lost in the big city and his own demons is thinly veiled with clichés and corny talk. Although Rudi Køhnke can carry it all with his overwhelming presence – this is the most uncompromisingly raw, brutally honest and savage performance in Danish film, since Refn’s Bleeder.” Magasinet KBH [translated from Danish]

” …the kind of art-horror that can be equal parts fascinating and frustrating, and I certainly felt both fascinated and frustrated at various points throughout the film. Victim of Love continually confused me, and just as I thought I had it figured at the fade-out, added a final scene that threw everything into doubt again. If that kind of cryptic storytelling appeals to you then you should find Victim of Love right up your alley.” Voices from the Balcony
