THE INTERGALACTIC ADVENTURES OF MAX CLOUD (2020) Reviews and overview

The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud is a 2020 British science-fiction action-comedy film about a gamer girl who gets sucked into her favourite game. Also known as simply Max Cloud.

Plot:
When teen gamer Sarah (Isabelle Allen) discovers an “Easter egg” and accidentally opens a portal into her favourite side-scroller game, she becomes trapped in a notorious intergalactic prison, home to the galaxy’s most dangerous villains. To escape, she must finish the game with a little help from her not-so-savvy friend on the outside… or remain a 16-bit character forever.

Directed by Martin Owen (Killers Anonymous; Let’s Be Evil; L.A. Slasher) from a screenplay co-written with Sally Collett, the movie stars Scott Adkins (Seized; Legacy of Lies), Tommy Flanagan, John Hannah,  Lashana Lynch and Isabelle Allen.

Reviews:
“Overall, if you’re a child of the 80’s like myself then Max Cloud is going to be right up your street with some laugh out loud moments of humour, memorable characters and some fantastic music choices. It’s a refreshing change of pace for Adkins who demonstrates his comedic chops but we still get plenty of fight scenes and action too.” The Action Elite

“Owen struggles to keep the movie rolling along, stopping the action to deal with dud additions, including Revengor, finding Hannah dreadful in the role, going over the top in the worst ways. Max Cloud isn’t the film it should be, or that many will expect it to be, but it periodically comes alive, and gaming references (including a “Mortal Kombat” tribute) will entertain fans, helping them to digest a flawed feature.” Blu-ray.com

“There is no doubt Max Cloud has a healthy amount of cheese but cheese done right can be entertaining and Max Cloud plays it right. If you’re a fan of old sci-fi or Sega Genesis brawlers you will get a good kick out of Max Cloud. It won’t be for everyone but at 88 minutes it’s worth a shot and can be a good time…” Bulletproof Action

“For fans of the video games and science fiction movies of the era (think Tron and Last Starfighter), Max Cloud is entertaining in a very way-back way, but Owen and screenwriter Sally Collett stretch the amusing gimmick to its breaking point. Frankly, this might work better as an episode of an anthology show than a full feature.” J.B. Spins

“The characters are ridiculous, the action is ridiculous, but there’s just something about watching Adkins in action scenes as the action star holds his own here. It’s just a shame that the film couldn’t even do those right. In the end, he was definitely at his best whenever he didn’t speak because his lines had to be the most awful.” Keith Loves Movies

“Fans will get kick watching Scott Adkins chomp and pose his way through scenes, but without the action he’s most known for, that only goes so far and his presence feels wasted. While it boasts an amusing premise, the story is never fleshed out enough to carry an entire film. There’s potential, but the entire film winds up more of a what-if or a what-could-have-been than a movie worth an 88-minute investment.” The Last Thing I See

“The physical sets look great, the acting is just on the right side of the line, the fight scenes are glorious with some top-notch cinematography during those scenes. Is the movie perfect? Of course, it isn’t. I mean come on a movie like this will always have some wonky elements but as far as I am concerned, it’s a hell of a lot of fun…” Nerdly

“As it stands, Max Cloud would have made a great short, or an episode of an anthology show. It could have delivered the fun and got out before its limitations showed. Instead, there’s a few inspired moments mixed in with a lot of going through the motions.” Voices from the Balcony
