SLATE (2020) Reviews of Korean action comedy

Slate is a 2020 South Korean action comedy film about a young woman who yearns to be a heroine and suddenly finds herself becoming one. She is transported to a strange “parallel world” where people carry swords and kill each other without any retribution.

Written and directed by Jo Bareun – making his feature directorial debut – the movie stars Ahn Ji-hye, Lee Min-ji and Park Tae-san.

Plot:

Since she was a child, Yeon-hee (Ahn Ji-hye) has dreamt of becoming an action star. Even though she has amazing swordsmanship, the reality of reaching her goal is just too hard for her to handle.

One day, she is hired as a stand-in for an action film and goes onto the set, only to be suddenly transported to a lawless parallel world where people carry swords and kill each other without any retribution.

Almost immediately, she is welcomed to the village as their protector and is respected by the villagers. And to save the villagers as a heroine, she begins to fight the villains…

Release:

Slate premiered at the 2020 Tokyo Film Festival.

Reviews:

” …while the world-building, characters, story and acting are all praiseworthy, the action is rather mediocre. The swordfights are short and very stilted, looking more like a budget movie action scene than a proper sword fight, and the ending adds confusion around the timeline of her disappearance in the real world.” Asian Film Fans
