Boss Level is a 2020 American science-fiction action film about a retired special forces officer who is trapped in a never-ending time loop.

Instead of being released theatrically, Deadline reported that Boss Level will be going straight to Hulu in 2021. The streaming service apparently acquired U.S. rights to the movie in an eight-figure deal. News today has confirmed that the film will be released on Friday, March 5, 2021, exclusively on Hulu.

Produced by Anthony Callie, Joe Carnahan, Alana Crow, Randall Emmett, George Furla, Frank Grillo and Michael J. Urann.

Plot:

Former special forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) is trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder. Pulver manages to uncover clues about a secret government project that could unlock the mystery behind his death.

Reviews:

F*ck me that was all kinds of insane: violence off the charts, the blackest of humor, a wacked out love affair and action that’s past bedtime stuff and it’s all rolled into this devilishly fun time-loop genre that rocked my socks off: Grillo is awesome, body like a 30yr old, kicks ass like a 40yr old and saves the world like a 50yr old: Joe Carnahan does it again: best action film of the year…” Absolute Movies

“The film is bloody and violent but in a cartoonish way that lets the audience savor the black humor of Roy’s many fatalities—and his occasional revenge […] And it ends on just the right open-ended note. Boss Level ultimately works because it doesn’t take itself too seriously and brings the audience along on its witty, madcap ride.” Ars Technica

“Beyond the high octane set pieces, outrageous MacGuffin and a leading man who fulfils the action hero brief with aplomb, Boss Level possesses a confidence and bravado that will make repeat viewings mandatory […] This film almost defies audiences not to be impressed by its gumption, gusto and infinite amounts of backbone mixed in with some audacious action beats.” Flickering Myth

” …a cartoonish, video game-like action thriller starring the impossibly-buff-at-54 Frank Grillo as an ex-special ops guy who gets killed by a gang of assassins over-and-over again. It’s par for the obnoxious macho course for director Joe Carnahan and necessary viewing only for ardent Grillologists” Reelist

“Don’t mind the title which sounds more fitting for a “B” movie flick. Basically, it’s Groundhog Day with a guy vs assassins, lots of guns, blades, and explosives. Anyone who likes time loop movies will have a good time with this crazy action-thriller-comedy – Definitely recommend!!!” Mobasshir Khan

“On the downside, a couple of scenes of vehicular mayhem are ruined by the obvious use of CGI. And the ending, or maybe I should say non-ending, is a major problem […] Despite that there’s no way I couldn’t recommend Boss Level. There’s plenty of action, Grillo shows once again that he’s one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. Most surprisingly, for the first time in a long time, Mel Gibson actually gives a decent performance.” Voices from the Balcony
