RISE OF THE MUMMY (2021) Reviews and overview

‘The legend continues’

Rise of the Mummy is a 2021 British horror film about a small group of archaeology students that accidentally awaken an ancient mummy. After being trapped in a time loop, the only way they can escape is to defeat the mummy. As the body count rises, it seems the mummy has to collect the souls of those who woke him to be able to walk the Earth – for good. Also known as Mummy Resurgence

Directed by Antonia Johnstone (an actress in Devil Djinn; Medusa: Queen of the Serpents; The Leprechaun’s Game; Cupid and this movie as Mora) – making her directorial debut – from a screenplay written by Shannon Holiday (Amityville Cornfield; Tooth Fairy; Bride of Scarecrow; House on Elm Lake; et al). Johnstone also provided special makeup effects and costumes.

The Jagged Edge Productions movie stars Abi Casson Thompson (The Candy Witch; Cupid), Megan Purvis (The Young Cannibals; Th’dread Rattlin’), Amanda-Jade Tyler (Bad Nun: Deadly Vows; Witches of Amityville Academy) and Stephanie Lodge. Genre regular Shawn C. Phillips has another pointless cameo role designed to help sell the film in the US.

Produced, edited and second directed by Scott Jeffrey (director of Bad Nun: Deadly Vows; Don’t Speak; Cupid; ClownDoll and The Bad Nun (et al) and producer of a mass of low-budget movies.

Reviews:
“Something I’ve found with Scott Jeffrey is that the films he directs tend to be of a higher quality than the ones where he is only the producer.  […] I mean, with Rise of the Mummy, you have a fairly small cast, an off-season high school location and a pre-existing Mummy costume, it looks like something that was quick and easy to put together…” Gav Crimson

” …the Mummy itself looks like a Halloween costume covered in dirty mop heads. It’s laughable rather than scary. The makeup for the victims it possesses is better but nothing special […] Rise of the Mummy is a disaster pretty much from the start. And it’s not the kind that’s so absurd you can get some unintentional fun out of it.” Voices from the Balcony
