Meanwhile, here is our previous coverage of Grizzly:

’18 feet of towering fury!! The most dangerous jaws on land!!!’

Grizzly is a 1976 American horror film about an eighteen-foot man-eating bear that terrorises a National Forest.

Directed by William Girdler from a screenplay co-written by Harvey Flaxman and David Sheldon, the movie stars Christopher George, Andrew Prine, Richard Jaeckel, Joan McCall and Joe Dorsey.

Widely considered a Jaws rip-off, Grizzly used many of the same plot devices as its shark-focused predecessor.

In 1983, a sequel Grizzly II: The Predator was shot, but post-production was never completed. The abortive project provided early roles for both Charlie Sheen (The Wraith; The Arrival; Scary Movie sequels) and George Clooney. In 2020 it was announced that the sequel has been completed and would be released in January 2021 as Grizzly II: Revenge.

Reviews:

” …Grizzly doesn’t have the finesse of Jaws, it doesn’t have the atmosphere or the ominous music and whilst it has some famous names it certainly doesn’t have the same calibre of acting […] entertaining but not because it is a great horror movie featuring a killer animal but because it is such an intentional rip-off of Jaws and is amusing because of those similarities which make you groan.” The Movie Scene

“William Girdler’s cash-in on Spielberg’s blockbuster follows the plot points in such detail it’s a small wonder no serious legal action was taken. This isn’t a suspense classic, but it’s passably trashy animalsploitation viewing with a pop culture status slightly outweighing the actual quality of the piece […] Prine steals the film, even though Girdler never utilizes the demented charisma the actor portrayed in his more nefarious roles…” Teenage Frankenstein

Grizzly is not all that bad when it comes right down to it, though it did perhaps go on for a little longer than it needed to. All the right elements were introduced to create a fairly suspenseful film and the bear is made to seem as scary as possible, the same technique used to make Jaws as frightening as it was. Where the latter succeeded, Grizzly was not so much scary as it was matter of fact – bears do what they need to do.” The Telltale Mind

“Although all of the kill scenes in Grizzly are effective (in a campy way), the pacing during all of the scenes where people are searching for the bear gets repetitive […] Overall, Girdler knew how to give us fun scenes and a decent movie and even though things could get a little stale, there is always something to remember in a Girdler picture.” The Video Graveyard
