SPACE SWEEPERS (2020) Reviews and overview of Korean sci-fi

‘2092, the space sweep begins!’

Space Sweepers is a 2020 Korean action science-fiction film about space junk collectors that discover a fugitive humanlike robot.

Directed by Sung-hee Jo (Phantom Detective; A Werewolf Boy), the Bidangil Pictures-Dexter Studios production stars starring Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu and Yoo Hae-jin.

Plot:

In 2092, a crew on board of the spaceship called “Victory”, is trying to escape the destruction of Earth – and make some money while at it salvaging space debris. After successfully snatching a crashed space shuttle in the latest debris chase, Victory’s crew find a seven-year-old girl inside. They realize that she’s the humanlike robot wanted by UTS Space Guards, and decide to demand a ransom…

Reviews:

“It’s effects-heavy, action-heavy, explosion heavy, fun heavy. The story is secondary, and arguably sometimes gets in the way. We’re here to see robots in space and little girls explode and apocalyptic terrorism, let’s not get up in our feelings. If dumb fun is in your future, this little adventure can be found on Netflix.” @ssholes Watching Movies

” …for all the stunning visuals and exciting effects-laden action sequences, Space Sweepers mostly misses its mark. The plot, which is also co-written by Jo Sung-Hee, lacks a fresh perspective other than recycling themes and ideas […] The movie also feels overlong…” Casey’s Movie Mania

“A perfectly watchable and enjoyable movie, Space Sweepers is carried by characters for which you can cheer and wonderful visuals that don’t miss a beat. The only thing missing is the element of surprise in a format that begs for it. Otherwise, all the elements are present – strong backstories, great CGI, character arcs, dramatic narrative and a robot that wants to be human.” The Review Geek
