SAFER AT HOME (2021) Reviews of pandemic online party thriller

‘Isolation is a killer’

Safer at Home is a 2021 American thriller film about a group of friends that throw an online party two years into the pandemic. A night of games, drinking and drugs ensues. After taking an ecstasy pill, things go terribly wrong and the safety of their home becomes more terrifying than the raging chaos outside…

Directed by Will Wernick (No Escape; Escape Room) from a screenplay co-written with Lia Bozonelis, based on a story co-written by Wernick, John Ierardi and Bozonelis. The movie stars Jocelyn Hudon, Emma Lahana, Alisa Allapach, Adwin Brown, Dan J. Johnson, Michael Kupisk and Daniel Robaire.

Reviews:

“What Host really had, and Safer at Home lacks, are credible characters. Instead, we’re confronted with the same nonsensical solipsism that made everyone glad that Cloverfield had monsters: Without them, it’s an annoying night with a bunch of squabbling dummies and their weak, occasionally nonsensical motivations[…] The audience is required to invest their emotional energy in seven people who consistently make terrible decisions and give even worse advice, and it’s not worth the return.” Austin Chronicle

Safer at Home can only have time capsule value as contemporary Reefer Madness camp about how doing ecstasy can lead to a ludicrously horrible outcome […] Maybe audiences don’t want drama that’s only one step removed from reality. They definitely don’t want drama that’s laughably unbelievable and aggressively anemic on top.” Culture Crypt

“Most of the actions taken and dialogue seemed so alien and out there. People typically don’t act or speak in the same manner as the characters, which completely removes one from the film. Wernick does have some interesting touches with some camera shots and editing techniques. While they weren’t nearly enough to save Safer At Home, I did appreciate them. Go ahead and pass on this one…” Punch Drunk Critics

“This is not a supernatural thriller. Nothing is crawling through the screens to possess people, there are no ancient curses or any other such thing. Safer at Home proceeds from a very basic and straightforward story and I was consistently impressed throughout with the twists and turns…” Vocal Media
