SENTINELLE (2020) Reviews of revenge thriller now on Netflix

Sentinelle is a 2020 French action thriller film about a female soldier who uses her lethal skills to avenge her sister’s brutal assault.

Directed by Julien Leclercq (Earth and Blood; The Bouncer; The Crew; The Assault) from a screenplay co-written with Matthieu Serveau. Produced by Julien Madon. The movie stars Olga Kurylenko (The Bay of Silence; The Room; Mara; Vampire Academy), Andrey Gorlenko, Michel Biel (Midnight Dreamers; Dunkirk) and Carole Weyers (Earth and Blood; The Room; Distorted).

Plot:

Klara (Olga Kurylenko) is a thirty-three-year-old interpreter in the French Army. After experiencing the horrors of war in Syria, she was transferred to Nice as part of Operation Sentinel. There, with her mother and her sister Tania, she tries to rebuild herself.

However, one evening, after going to a nightclub, Tania is found half-dead on the beach having been carnally assaulted and beaten up. Klara will then do everything to find the attackers and avenge her sister. This merciless hunt will lead her in the footsteps of Yvan Kadnikov, the son of a powerful Russian oligarch of the French Riviera…

Reviews:

” …refreshingly simplistic in plot, instead concentrating on the rotting core of the main character as she struggles to find one form of justice for a wounded loved one. It’s revenge cinema pulled off with ferocity, giving Kurylenko something to work with as Leclercq arranges riveting escalation, delivering a brutalizer with some deep-seated pain to examine.” Blu-ray.com

Sentinelle delivers exactly what I wanted from this type of movie. Quick, to the point, and violent, it gets in, cracks skulls, and gets out. With a compelling, layered protagonist and badass turn from Olga Kurylenko, this more than scratches a particular action itch.” The Last Thing I See

Sentinelle is like a one-track movie that (probably) purposefully tries not to do anything new or shocking. It follows a set path and very aggressively goes down that path. If you want to see something new or mind-blowing, this movie will highly disappoint you. But at 80 minutes, it’s good for a light watch.” Leisure Byte

“Despite the single tone running through the film, it is worth watching because Sentinelle is tightly packed in 80 minutes, meaning the lack of range in the story suffers less. This is a thematic revenge thriller that needs more script.” Ready Steady Cut

“We’ve been graced with some wonderfully creative revenge thrillers as of late and Sentinelle, unfortunately, struggles to step out the shadow cast by those films. Sentinelle is not a bad film per-se, this is a brisk, pacey thriller that does what it needs to do and gets out without much fuss. Unfortunately, it also leaves with little fanfare or lasting effect on its audience either.” The Review Geek

“A woman fights to set things right in the world after having already witnessed so much wrong? Yeah, that works for me. The fact that she’s gay doesn’t hurt either, but in the context of this plot, it serves an additional purpose; To see how confused men are when she clearly doesn’t care about their attention. Quite the opposite, she turns away from it.” Womanentertainment
