MACABRO (2019) Reviews of Brazilian true crime thriller

Macabro is a 2019 Brazilian thriller film based on a true story about two young brothers who were accused of brutal murders in the 1990s.

Directed by Marcos Prado (Curumim: Diary of a Brazilian on Death Row; Artificial Paradises) from a screenplay co-written by Rita Glória Curvo, Pablo Padilla, Lucas Paraizo and Pedro Riguetti.

The Zazen Produções-Querosene Filmes production stars Renato Góes, Amanda Grimaldi, Guilherme Ferraz, Diego Francisco, Eduardo Tomaz, Juliana Schalch, Flávio Bauraqui and Paulo Reis.

Plot:

During the 1990s, two brothers were accused of murdering eight women, a man and a child in Sierra de los Órganos, a Brazilian region. In the eyes of the suspects, Sergeant Téo realizes that the judgment from the press, police and the local society is fundamentally racist, and he begins to have doubts about the conviction of one of them.

Reviews:

” …the scenery is often beautiful, especially Rio’s photogenic mountains. Yet, despite soaking up the picturesque landscape, cinematographer Azul Serra makes everything look ominous. In terms of category, it is definitely a thriller, but the brothers’ reputed satanic pacts and voodoo rituals supply enough elements to keep most horror fans intrigued as well.” J.B. Spins

” …Macabre is a solid thriller. Part police procedural, part horror film and part psychological drama the film juggles a lot of balls and manages to keep them all airbourne with the result that we are on the edge of out seats until the very end.” Unseen Films

Having been shown at some festivals, Macabro is being represented at the European Film Market (EFM) by Argentinian sales group Filmsharks.
