TRIGGER POINT (2021) Reviews of action thriller with Barry Pepper

Trigger Point is a 2021 Canadian action-thriller about a retired U.S. special operative who becomes part of an elite “invisible” team.

Directed by Brad Turner (Goofballs) from a screenplay written by Michael Vickerman, the High Park Entertainment-Landmark Studio Group production stars Barry Pepper, Laura Vandervoort, Colm Feore and Eve Harlow.

Plot:

Nicolas Brazer (Barry Pepper) is a retired U.S. special operative who worked in the darkest shadows of the government, part of an elite “invisible” team that quietly took out some of the worst villains around the world. After being blamed for the exposure, and ultimately the assassination, of several members of his own team, Nicolas then disappeared into a life of solitude and indignity…

Now, two years later, he is reluctantly drawn back into this dangerous world – with both enemies and supposed friends coming after him – to not only clear his name but to prevent the killing of a new generation of noble operatives…

Reviews:

” …suffers from a mostly impenetrable narrative that grows less and less interesting as time progresses, and although Turner has peppered the proceedings with a small handful of compelling action sequences, the picture’s general absence of forward momentum essentially cancels out its few positive attributes (including a typically engaging performance by Pepper)…” Reel Fim Reviews

“In between gab fests Pepper shoots oodles of black-clad, ski-masked men whose squibs squirt crimson as they fall backwards, or frontwards, or sideways, and Pepper never misses. Lucky him. The capper is a reveal so ludicrously offensive that it only could have been conceived by a white male Hollywood screenwriter nurturing some deeply-held racial and sexist resentments he wants to be somehow clever about.” RogerEbert.com

“Barry Pepper and Colm Feore carry Trigger Point through familiar territory with ease. It’s far from original and farther still from greatness thanks to iffy pacing and a slap in the face of an ending, but the thrills and mystery element provide enough mileage to keep the movie going. If there is a sequel it should lean farther into action, but the movie we get is good enough.” Voices from the Balcony
