‘No light. No salvation.’
The Superdeep is a 2020 Russian horror film about a small research team investigating the secret of the world’s deepest borehole. What they have found turned out to be the greatest threat in history. And the future of humanity is in their hands.
Written and directed by Arseny Syuhin, the movie stars Milena Radulovic, Sergey Ivanyuk, Nikolay Kovbas, Vadim Demchog, Kirill Kovbas, Nikita Dyuvbanov, Viktor Nizovoy and Albina Chaykina.
“There’s a simple, solid concept buried deep within the core of The Superdeep, but it’s not one that Syuhin fleshed out beyond that. It’s a short film stretched out well beyond its limitations. The filmmaker tries to compensate by throwing in a slew of borrowed ideas from influences that include The Last of Us, Alien, Resident Evil, and The Thing, yet none of them stick.” Bloody Disgusting
” …there isn’t much I like about Superdeep, but I will acknowledge that the visuals and special effects work well for the most part. As soon as we’re many kilometers under Earth’s surface (in the superdeep, as it were), the effects down there look great. The story is just a hybrid of other movies you’ve seen before and mostly The Thing.” Heaven of Horror
” …Superdeep is definitely one of the more effective Russian genre films to be released in the last few years (but dubbing the dialog was definitely a mistake). When you get right down to it, the combination of hardcore Communists and virulent viruses should scare the pants off everyone. Recommended for fans of arctic and viral horror…” J.B. Spins
” …you don’t even need to take the (super shallow) cheap shot that any horror film titled Superdeep serves up to pick apart this slow-walked bore. It’s acted, filmed and shot in ways that spoil its limited dramatic/suspense/fright possibilities, a classic 85-minute movie wrapped in a 103-minute package.” Movie Nation
” …audiences used to the pace and spectacle of ‘mainstream’ cinema might find it a little laboured and its visual look a bit too drab, some might find its dubbing rather clumsy and the music soundtrack jarring. But The Superdeep is a darkly brooding affair delivering a unique and visceral experience even as it riffs on familiar themes and ideas.” Starburst
“The acting is mostly just OK, though lead Radulovic is quite good. The idea of this infectious and deadly contingent is an interesting one and feels quite relevant to today’s world. Unfortunately, it never reaches its full potential. The movie is dragged out and way too long, for its own good. It also lacks any real tension or suspense.” Words from the Master
The Superdeep, or Superdeep as it’s also known, will stream in June on the Shudder platform.
