‘Never underestimate a nobody’
Nobody is a 2020 American action crime thriller film about a bystander who intervenes to help a woman being harassed by a group of thugs. Unwittingly, he becomes the target of a vengeful Russian gangster.
Directed by Ilya Naishuller from a screenplay by Derek Kolstad (John Wick franchise), the 87North-Eighty Two Films production movie stars Bob Odenkirk (Freaks of Nature; Hell & Back), Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman 1984; Sea Fever), Christopher Lloyd and J.P. Manoux. Produced by Braden Aftergood, Kelly McCormick, Bob Odenkirk and Marc Provissiero.
Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is an underestimated and overlooked dad and husband, taking life’s indignities on the chin and never pushing back. A nobody.
When two thieves break into his suburban home one night, Hutch declines to defend himself or his family, hoping to prevent serious violence. His teenage son, Blake (Gage Munroe), is disappointed in him and his wife, Becca (Connie Nielsen), seems to pull only further away.
The aftermath of the incident strikes a match to Hutch’s long-simmering rage, triggering dormant instincts and propelling him on a brutal path that will surface dark secrets and lethal skills. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tyres, Hutch must save his family from a dangerous Russian sociopathic scumbag gangster (Aleksey Serebryakov) and ensure that he will never be underestimated as a nobody again.
Reviews [click links to read more]:
“Overall, Nobody is a well-paced and massively enjoyable action film that has a great lead, impressive action throughout, a simple but effective story and is well directed. If you get a chance to see this on the big screen (if you feel safe to do so, of course) then I recommend it!” The Action Elite
“Written by John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad, Nobody shares a similar mixture of snappy dialogue, wry humor and heightened, nigh-cartoonish levels of violence and mayhem: the imaginative carnage of the film’s third act, which feels like an R-rated riff on Home Alone, is jaw-droppingly bonkers.” The Lamplight Review
“Nobody works because it values scene construction and action choreography above all else, leaving behind pretension and the overplotting that’s been common in the genre in recent years. It doesn’t break any molds so much as present a really good time within a familiar structure.” RogerEbert.com
“Nobody intriguingly starts as a 21st-century version of Straw Dogs, as an exploration of modern or contemporary masculinity faced with the threat of physical violence, before segueing, each time less interestingly, into A History of Violence-style examination of a middle-class family man rediscovering his inner psychopath, before finally devolving into a haphazardly executed Home Alone-meets-John-Wick-style finale.” Screen Anarchy
” …Bob Odenkirk? […] His placement at the center of the film not only sells the “average guy” masquerade better than Liam Neeson ever could, but it makes his inner struggle and his displays of violence actually stand out. Regardless of the fact that you’ve seen this exact movie a dozen times, you just don’t expect it. It’s great!” UK Film Review
“What this film does so brilliantly is push the action to comical extremes without destroying its narrative structure. It gives the audience what it wants and does so in a way that’s so exaggerated that it compels at least part of that audience to examine why it wants that and whether it should.” The Wrap

Better known for comedy roles, actor Bob Odenkirk had to train with stuntman Daniel Bernhardt, learning a melange of boxing, jujitsu, karate, and judo moves. He told Entertainment Weekly: “The fist-bloodying fight sequences were as much fun as being in a comedy room,” he says. “I mean, I’ve never had that much fun since we wrote Mr. Show. It’s a group effort. Anytime you see a fight sequence in a movie that has a bunch of people, as soon as they yell ‘Cut!,’ everyone laughs.
In the USA, Universal Pictures released Nobody theatrically on March 26th 2021. The film was also initially available On-Demand
